My Great Great Granduncle James Edgar Martin was born January 26, 1846; Enlisted June 10. 1861, Garysburg, N.C. into the 5th reg't N.C. Inf. (volunteers). On 11-14-61 the designation was changed to the 15th reg't N.C. Inf. Served his 1 year and returned as a substitute on 12-13-62. Captured 4-3-65 at Petersburg. P.O.W. at Point Lookout, Md. Released 6-29-65 after taking Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. Died 4-30-1892 in Northampton Co., N.C. Buried in the Kinchen Martin Cemetery, Conway, N.C.

My Great Great Granduncle also known as Simon Peter Martin and Sidney p. Martin. Born March 25, 1844 in Northampton Co. N.C.; enlisted June 10,1861 at Garysburg, N.C. into the 5th reg't N.C. Inf. (volunteers). November 14, 1861 the designation changed to the 15th reg't N.C. Inf.; Simeon was in Co. A as a private. Died July 25, 1865 in Northampton Co. N.C.; Buried in the Kinchen Martin Cemetery located at Conway, N.C.

John enlisted 2 May 1861 at Monroe NC. He was wounded on 16 Oct 1863 in action at Bristow Station. Sent to hospital and returned to his unit in Nov. 1863. He survived the war. He is the son of Winnie Thomas b. 1808 who is my 2nd cousin 5x removed.

Thomas followed his brother John and enlisted a day later also at Monroe, Union County North Carolina in Co B. 15th NC Infantry. He was 22 years old. He was transferred to Co I 48th Regiment North Carolina Infantry on 1 Marxh 1863.

Cullen was born 5 Feb 1846 on Richardson Creek, Union Co. NC. He has 6 cards in his archival file. One source gives his date of enlistment as May 1861, but his CMR gives it as 6 July 1861. Enlisted for 1 year by Capt. William Mackal. On 18 March 1862 he is a patient in the Seminary Hospital at Williamsburg, Va. with Dx of Febris Typhoidis. He had enlisted as a Pvt. he is mustered out on 20 Aug 1862 but was retained in service as a conscript under the new Confederate Govt. Conscription Law. He served until the end of the war. He was reenlisted as a Musician, the rank he kept until the end of the war. He was involved in 25 major battles including Seven Days, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Globe Tavern, Squirrel Level Road and the last federal attack on Petersburg on 2 April 1865. His Regiment served under General's Howell Cobb & John Rogers Cook. He died 26 Jan 1885 and is buried in the Brooks family cemetery in Union Co. NC. He was the father-in-law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Benjamin was born 28 Feb 1842 in Davie County NC. He was 19 years old when he enlisted on 3 May 1961 in the 5th Regiment NC. Vol's at Monroe, Union Co. NC. He enlisted as 1st Corporal. He is wounded on 16 April 1862 at Dam #1 Warwick Creek, Va. 4 Mar 1863 he is appointed to rank of 2nd Sgt and on 4 June 1863 to 1st Sgt. On 14 Oct 1863 he is seriously wounded in Battle of Bristo Station with [ gunshot wound to right thigh with mini ball lodged in bone ] He is sent to hospital at Salisbury, NC . The medical board recommends he be allowed to resign as he is unfit for duty of any kind. He recovers at home and on 26 Jan 1864 he returns to his company. On 4 April 1864 he is promoted to [Brevet] 2nd Lieut. and to full 2nd Lieut. on 17 June. ON 27 Oct 1864 his medical condition forces him to retire. He is assigned to the Invalid Corps under Lt. Gen T. H. Holmes. While on active duty he served with Cook's Brigade, Heath's Division, A.P. Hill's Corps Army of Northern Virginia. He died 22 Jan 1921 in Terrell, Kaufman Co. Texas and is buried in College Mound Cem. in that town. May God rest his soul. We are related by a distant marriage.

Daniel, Drurey M., Private Company B, 15th North Carolina Infantry “The Monroe Light Infantry” Resided in Caswell County and enlisted in Wake County on July 15, 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for until he was “sent to hospital” in August 1862. Never returned to the company and was dropped from the rolls on or about September 1, 1863, because he was “supposed to be dead.” Born: October 22, 1836 in Caswell Co., NC Died: June 20, 1915 in NC Buried: unknown Married: Frances S. Clayton Children: unknown Occupation: unknown

My maternal great-great-grandfather John Allen Helms was born in what is now Monroe, Union County, NC on January 16, 1839. He enlisted on May 3, 1861 in Monroe, NC at age 22. He was a farmer by occupation prior to enlistment. The 15th NC was known as the 5th NC Volunteers at the time he enlisted, but was renamed the 15th NC Regiment 'Monroe Light Infantry' during the Confederate army re-organization in 1862. John served the duration of the war with the same unit, excluding time to recover from a wound in the left hip that he sustained at the Battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland on Sept. 17, 1862. He was present or accounted for until he was paroled at Lynchburg, VA on April 15, 1865. In Decmeber 1865, he married Mary Josephine Presley, an ancestor of Elvis Presley. They raised six children, with John acquiring large amounts of land in Union County area. He also operated two restaurants/taverns in Monroe, NC. In 1888, John and his family were one of four founding families of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Union County. John died from sudden heart failure in Union County on April 23, 1923 at the age of 84. He is buried in Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery, with his wife Mary Josephine, who died in 1909. John was buried in a plain pine box coffin, and his last ride to the church for the funeral was in the bed of a Ford Model T pickup. The tombstone for John and Mary only shows their names and birth and death dates, no mention of CSA service for John. His family recently erected an iron Southern Cross at his grave site. Family legend is that John vehemently declined to speak about his war experiences after his service ended. He also was alive and living in Union County during the Confederate reunions held there, but did not attend.

Three Lankford brothers (Lovel, Jerome and Walter Y) went to war. Lovel the oldest fought the entire war with the 15th N.C. Infantry Regiment. Jerome the next oldest enlisted with D Company 55th N.C. Infantry upon it formation is May 1862. My Great great grandfather Walter Y. was the youngest of the brothers and joined his brother Jerome in Company D in 1863. Both Jerome and Walter became POWs (captured at different times) both ended up in Point Lookout POW camp in MD. Jerome died there and Walter was released in early 1865.

McCoy was Court-martialed on January 1864 (title of record G.O. #1-1), charges not stated, but he was returned to duty. He was captured at hatcher’s Run during the Battle at Petersburg, Va., and was a P.O.W. incarcerated at The Prisoner of War Camp at Hart’s Island, New York. He was released June 18, 1865 after taking The oath of Allegiance. His description was given as follows – complexion: fair, hair: dark, eyes: blue, height: 5 ft. 6 in, place of residence: Union County, North Carolina. Confederate Veteran Monroe Light Infantry. 15th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry: 15th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 5th Volunteers, was organized at Garysburg, North Carolina, in June, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Northampton, Union, Cleveland, Franklin, Harnett, Alamance, and Edgecombe. With about 800 officers and men, the unit was ordered to Yorktown, Virginia. In April, 1862, it had 532 effectives and during the war served under Generals H. Cobb and Cooke. It fought in the Seven Days' Battles, the Maryland Campaign, and at Fredericksburg. In January, 1863, the regiment moved to Charleston and Savannah, then returned to Virginia. After serving in the Richmond area during the Pennsylvania Campaign it was active in numerous conflicts from Bristoe to Cold Harbor. Later it saw action in the Petersburg trenches south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. The unit reported 21 killed and 110 wounded at Malvern Hill; 11 killed, 48 wounded, and 124 missing of the 402 engaged at Crampton's Gap; and 3 killed, 52 wounded, and 8 missing of the 133 at Sharpsburg. It sustained 121 casualties at Fredericksburg, 101 at Bristoe, and 113 from May 1 to June 21, 1864. The records show 16 officers and 122 men were present on April 9, 1865. Green and Robert P. Jerome.

NC 15th Infantry He was Killed on 12/13/1862 at Fredericksburg, VA He was listed as: * POW 9/16/1862 Boonsboro, MD * Confined 9/17/1862 Fort Delaware, DE (Estimated day) * Transferred 10/2/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA (Estimated day) * Exchanged 11/10/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA * Returned 11/12/1862 (place not stated) (Estimated day) Enroute with his company from South Mountain to Antietam, MD on Sept. 16, 1862, Samuel McRory was captured. He was held prisoner at Ft. Delaware until Oct. 2, when he was transferred to Aikens Landing, James River, VA and exchanged as a prisoner of war on Nov. 10, 1862. After Samuel's return to his company, the 15th Regiment was transferred to Cooke's command, on Dec. 13, 1862, in the battle of Fredericksburg, VA, the regiment occupied a position on top of a hill called Marye's Heights. Fire from the enemy was concentrated toward their position and six times Union Troops stormed within 100 yards of the Confederate line. Six times their advances were halted and they were forced to retreat. When night came they had disappeared into town, leaving their dead and wounded behind. At the age of 21, Samuel McRory gave his life in battle.

Daniel Brooks(1837-1933) was a free African-American from Duncans Creek in Cleveland County, NC who felt pressured, along with his brother, Milford, to join the Confederate Army before they were conscripted. They enlisted near Shelby in 1861 along with white friends Daniel and Joseph Lattimore. It is presumed that Daniel was assigned to Company D of the 15th North Carolina Regiment with the Lattimore brothers. Milford was assigned to a different company (15th ?) and was never heard from again. The family assumed Milford died of injury or disease. Daniel's Company was transferred to the NC 49th, becoming the 2nd Company B. He was at the fall of Fort Fisher and mustered out with illness afterwards.

Lorenzo Fulcher, no middle name. My 3rd Great Grandfather. Lorenzo Fulcher was born to Burgess and Betsey Gregory Fulcher on 1 August 1832 in Person County, North Carolina. He later married Sarah Jane Clayton on 20 September 1860 in Person County, NC. He enlisted in Company E, 15th Infantry Regiment of North Carolina on 15 July 1862. He died almost a month to the day later, in the Battle of Crampton's Gap, in Burkittsville, Frederick, Maryland, on 14 September 1862. He was 30 years old. I can't find any records on where 15th NC Co. E soldiers were buried. Any information is greatly appreciated. Also looking for information on his wife. They had a child who was later raised by the wife's parents. Thank you.

From Franklin County, he enlisted in Company E, 15th North Carolina Infantry and mustered as Private on 16 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal in February 1862. He was captured in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862. He was held at Fort Delaware until transferred 2 October to Aiken's Landing, VA where he was exchanged on 10 November 1862. He returned to duty at about the end of 1862. He was promoted again, to Sergeant on 11 December 1863 and was wounded by gunshot to the chest (probably at Spotsylvania Court House, VA) on 10 May 1864. He was with his company when it was surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, VA on 9 April 1865. After the War A farmer in Franklin County, NC, he married Annie Bennett Hill (1849-1905) in 1866 and they had 10 children together. He died of pneumonia at age 45 (or 42); his youngest child, daughter Martha "Mattie" Gertrude (1884-1941) was not yet one year old.

Levi E. Pearce, born abt 1840, died before 1894 Co. E 15th Infantry Regiment N.C. CSA (The Tar River Guards) Per military record: Place of residence and place of enlistment: Franklin Co. Enlist date: 16 May 1861 Rank at enlistment: Private Mustered out (disability discharge) on Dec. 27, 1861. Source: North Carolina Troops 1861-65, A Roster 9 Dec. 1861 admitted to Episcopal Church hospital, Williamsburg, VA. 10 Dec 1861 transferred to General Hospital-Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, VA. I have not been able to find any record of Levi anywhere after his release from the hospital 10 Dec. 1861. Not on census records nor on his fathers will where all the other living children were mentioned hence the assumption of death prior to 1894 as that is the date of his father's will. Perhaps he died trying to get home from Richmond.

Edward Power was a private in Company E, 15th Regiment of the N.C. Troops. He enlisted the 24th day of February 1862 at the age of 49 yrs. old and his profession at the time of enlistment was a School Teacher. I have his 'Soldier's Discharge' paper. there are several Captain's names on the paper; & signed with their signatures; William C. Ballard (Capt.) Commanding Company...George Thompson (Captain) & William Benbaugh who wrote the discharge. He was discharged 0n April 8, 1864 @ age 51 yrs. after serving two yrs. & provided transportation to Richmond, Va. also states he was 5ft. 9in, had light skin, gray eyes & Gray hair Edward Power is not my relative I am posting this for a friend (Eddie Lee Frazier)

Recieved wound to left arm and was amputated. Survived the war and went to Kentucky in 1870,married Maggie Malone and they both walked back to Kittrell,N.C. Anthony and Maggie had 4 children before Maggie died in 1881. Anthony married after 1881 to Cora Roberts and had 2 children. Anthony lived and worked in Kittrell,N.C. until his passing on 29 Apr. 1915.

Daniel Black was my GG Uncle. He enlisted in Harnett County, NC in May 1861 and was KIA at Bristoe Station, Virginia on 14 Oct 1863.

Duncan Black was my GG Grandfather. He was born in 1844 and died in 1919.

He was my Great-Great Grandfather. He died on July 5, 1923, and was buried at Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Franklin County, NC.

My maternal grandmother was a Jackson. William Sherwood Jackson (b. 1830, NC; d. 1879, AR) was her grandfather. William's father, James Jonathan Jackson (b. 1809, NC; d. 1879, TN), was a Captain in Company G, 15th NC Infantry. James Jonathan Jackson was born in Franklin County, NC.

Gray B. Murphy entered the CSA on 5/20/61 as 3d Sergent, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 10/30/61, promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 5/2/62, wounded @ Sharpsburg, Md. on 9/17/62, promoted to Captain on 2/24/64. - He was my Great-Great-Grandfather. From Franklin Co. N.C.

Charles was born 11 Sept. 1830 in Warren County, NC. He has 32 items in his archival file. The 1860 census finds him at age 29 in Alamance County NC. The Post Office is at Graham. He enlists 21 May 1861 at Graham by J. R. Stockton for 12 months and mustered 17 June. [* Note the 15th Regiment was originally the 5th Regiment and the designation was changed to the 15th by Special Oreder #222 dated 14 Nov. 1861] He enlisted as Pvt, then 4th Corp, 3rd Corporal then on 30 Nov 1864 to Sergeant. 15 Nov 1861 the regiment was ordered to Yorktown, Va and was assigned to Cobb's Brigade. Saw action at Lee's Mill, Malvern Hill, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, where it was transferred to Cook's Brigade North Carolina Troops. Continued the fight at Bristoe Station, Cold Harbor, and Siege of Petersburg. On 31 March 1865 he is captured at Hatcher's Run Va and taken to Point Lookout, Md. Released 20 June 1865 after swallowing the yellow dog. The 15th NC surrendered 16 Officers and 122 men. He died in 1906 in Chapel Hill, Orange Co. NC. He was the father-in-law of the stepdaughter of my 1st cousin 4 x removed.

My Great-Grandfather was from Wayne County, North Carolina.

Enlisted as a 2nd Sergeant on 24 May 1861 at the age of 23. Reduced to ranks on 15 May 1862. Promoted to Sergeant Major on 6 July 1862. Reduced to ranks on 1 January 1863 due to prolonged absence. Transferred into Company E, 33rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment for promotion on 1 July 1863.

Enlisted as a Private on 24 May 1861 at the age of 31. Promoted to Assistant Surgeon on 29 January 1863. Transferred to 43rd Infantry Troops Regiment North Carolina on 29 January 1863.

Transferred into Co.'I' from 27th Co. 'K' 2/15/1863 in exchange for Pvt. Amaziah Parks. Wounded at Bristoe St., Va. and was surrendered with Gen. Lee at Appomattox.

My GG Grandfather, wounded twice, captured. sent to Hart's Island, sick while imprisoned, died at age 90 in 1929.

Wounded on April 16, 1862 at Lee's Mill, Virginia and later resigned his commission because of complications with the wound.
