Col. Alphonso Calhoun Avery b. 11 Sep 1835 Burke Co., NC d.13 Jun 1913 Morganton, Burke Co., NC. Husband of Susan Washington Morrison Avery the sister of Mary Anna Morrison Jackson the wife of Gen. Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson; the sister of Eugiena Erixine Morrison Barringer the wife of Gen. Rufus Clay Barringer of the 1st NC Cavalry; the sister of Isabella S. Morrison Hill the wife of Gen. Daniel Harvery 'DH' Hill; and the sister of Capt. Joseph Graham Morrison the 'aid-de-camp' to Gen. Stonewall Jackson and later aid to Gen. Stephen Dodson Ramseur. Alphonso C. Avery was commissioned 1st Lt. in Co F, in the 6th NC Regiment, he saw action at Battle of Manasses and was promoted to Capt. after the Battle of Seven Pines. He was captured in the Spring of 1865 and was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Tennessee until paroled in Aug. 1965. Maj. Avery was a graduate of the University of North Carolina,a lawyer and after the war he became a judge on the North Carolina Supreme Court and later the North Carolina Supreme Court Justice. He is buried in Morganton, Burke Co., NC.

1826-1915 Enlisted 22 Sept 1862 in Burke Co., NC. Eventually discharged from service for being permanently disabled by rheumatism after being furloughed for 60 days in July 1863.

1835-1864 Enlisted 22 Sept 1862 in Burke Co., NC. Captured after being wounded in the left foot at the Battle of Cedar Creek, VA on 14 Oct 1864. Died of tetanus aboard US hospital steamer "Baltic" and buried at sea on 9 Nov 1864.

Harris, Henry Speck. (1837-1863).Henry Speck Harris was born at Bahama, N.C. on February 12, 1837, and died at the battle of Seven Pines (Virginia) on May 20, 1863. Was my 2x gr. uncle. He was in Chimborazo Hospital No. 4, Richmond, Va. for disease Debility and Pertonitis chronic. Discharged to Durham NC on 26 May 1862. Do not know date of death or place of burial.

Born 1839, Person County NC. joined Co.B,6th Regt. with his brother Nathaniel on May 1, 1861 at Hillsboro NC Court House. Fought in every major action of the Army of Northern Va. from 1st Manassas until paroled at Appamattox April 1865. Listed on a Roll of Honor.

Joined Company B, NC 6th Regiment with his brother Joseph G. Lunsford, at the Orange County Court House in Hillsboro N.C. in May 1st 1862 at age 19, On roll of honor 1863, transferred to Regimental Band . Sent to Camp of Instructions in Richmond Va. by order of General Lee 1863. Involved in every major action of the Army of Northern Va. from 1st Manassas until Paroled at Appomattox Va. April 1865.

Moses, Alexander resided in Burke County, NC where he was conscripted into service at the age of 18, on September 22, 1862 for the war. Present and accounted through December 1864. No further records. His wife Nancy Moses field for her widow's pension in 1906 in York County, SC. He was born in 1836 and died in 1904. He is buried at Bethany Presbyterian Church in York County, SC.

A Farmer, married with 4 young children, Solomon nevertheless enlisted in the 53rd N.C. Infantry Regiment on 22 March 1862. On 30 April 1862 he joined Co'D' of the 53rd Regiment. Being age 42 at the time of his enlistment he was discharged as Over-age. On the 1st of April 1864 at the age of 45 he joined Co. 'B' of the 6th N.C. infantry Regiment in Lenoir County, N.C. At some point he was captured and sent to the notorious Union prison at Point Lookout, Maryland where he died on 27 February 1865.

RESIDED IN BURKE COUNTY N.C. ENLISTED AT AGE 34 ON SEPTEMBER 22 1862. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE BOWELS AT GETTYSBURG AND DIED IN THE HOSPITAL AT GETTYSBURG ON JULY 8 1863

This was my great great grandfather. He is buried in Valdese North Carolina at Abee's Grove Baptist Church Cemetary.

Joined out of Burke Co in 4/64. Was wounded on 3/25/65 at Ft Stedman when he “was buried under three feet of earth” according to his pension record. Surrendered at Appomattox with Lee and was listed on the surrender role. Returned to Burke Co and then to McDowell county after the war. Had six children. Died in 1919 and is buried at Oak Grove cemetery, Marion, NC.

Moses, Moulton enlisted in Alamance County, NC at the age of 19 on June 15, 1861 for the war. Captured at Rappahannock Station, VA on November 7, 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, MD until paroled and exchanged on March 14, 1865. Received at Boulware's Wharf, James River, VA March 16, 1865. He filed for his Confederate pension on May 31, 1901 in Burke County, NC. He died on February 25, 1925 and is buried at Denton's Chapel Methodist Church in Burke County, NC.

John Leonard Ollis was from Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina as a Private on August 16/61 he mustered into Co E. He was wounded September 17/62 at Sharpsburg, MD. He was Absent from with his wounds on August 20/62 where he was ordered home by General Hood, he went back to Linville Falls to heal. He returned January 31/63, and was reported as a Deserted on July 23/63 with 'With one rifle musket accuretments and 40 rounds of ammunition $48.45'. He was captured by the enemy and held at Fort Miffin Pa August 17/64 and took the Oath of Allegiance Sept 2/64

31 year old Merritt Pendley was living at Inglls,Avery Co NC when he joined the CSA, June 15,1861. He was in CoE 6th regiment,NC state troops. Promoted to 1st Sgt feb 1, 1863. Wounded in the thigh at Gettysburg July 1, 1863. Taken prisoner and died in the hospital there September 18,1863.Was burried there and later moved to Oakwood Cemetery,grave# 480,Wake County,NC

From Mitchell county Jacob enlisted as a Private in Alamance, NC by Issac E. Avery on 27 June 1861 at the age of 18. Wounded on 21 July 1861 at Manassas, VA. Absent, wounded on 25 July 1861est. Returned on 15 December 1861 est. Wounded on 02 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA in right thigh. Sent to Richmond, VA to Wayside hospital admitted 19 July 1863. Admitted 20 July to Chimborazo hospital in Richmond, VA. Absent from records rest of the war. Mentioned in the letter home from Pvt. English. Buried on Roaring Creek 'Jake' now with military stone in 2009.

Aaron A. Wiseman was born in Yancey County NC August 17, 1840. Present day, Avery County. Son of Alexander and Delilah Fox Wiseman. At the age of 20 he enlisted at Alamance County, NC. He was assigned to Company E, 6th NC state troops. Captain CE Avery was company commander. He first saw combat July 21,1861 at 1st Manassas (Bull Run). He died at Camp Jones Virginia, near Manassas September 25, 1862. He died from sickness and was buried near by.

Enzor C Wiseman lived at Ingalls NC.At the age of 21 he joined the CSA army May 28, 1861. His first assignment was with Company E, 6th regiment,NC state troops. He was wounded at Sharpsburg Md. Sept17,1862. After recovering from his wound March 31st,1863 he was transferred to Co. A, 58th regiment,NC state troops.August 1,1863 he was taken prisoner at Wild Cat Ketucky. After being released he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to Co B, NC 5th Cavalry and later to the 63rd state troops.

John Abram McKama Wiseman was the son of Elizabeth Wiseman. His fathers name was Taylor but John never went by that name. He was known as Mack. Born August 1834 and raised on the Toe River in present day Avery county NC. At the age of 26 he joined the CSA Army at Alamance County N C Dec, 13, 1861. Wounded in the left elbow during the second battle of Manassas. I think the day he was wounded was May 29, 1862. When recovered enough he returned to duty at Salisbury NC. Assigned to a hospital at Petersburg VA as a nurse. After service Mack raised a family. Worked as a carpenter, mined Mica and farmed.

John W. Wiseman was born in Yancey County NC present day Avery County. Son of Bedford Wiseman. Joined the CSA Army at Camp Vance October 4, 1863. Was assigned to Company E, 6th Regiment NC State Troops. He had several brothers and uncles also serving in the CSA Army so the family never understood why he switched sides. Not much is known about his service history. It is known most of the time he was in Old Capitol Prison at Washington, DC. Was discharged March 1, 1864.

Thomas Wiseman, son of William E. and Eliza McKinney Wiseman was born in Yancey County NC, present day Avery. Joined the CSA Army at Mecklenburg County NC May 28, 1861 and was assigned to Company E, 6th NC Infantry. He was 21 years old. September 14, 1862 he was taken prisoner at Cumberland Gap. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware. Rejoined unit and was wounded in neck during battle at Winchester, Virginia. Some records show he died and was buried there September 21, 1864. Family records show he and brother-in-law Adelburt J. Childs (Graham) was given leave and they returned home. Both became ill with Typhus and died within days of the other. They are buried side by side in a cemetery at Lenoir, Caldwell County NC. Thomas had one full brother, Wesley. Wesley left home while young. Fought for the North and never returned home. Aware he might not be treated as family he made his home in Tennessee.

My great uncle served with the 6th. Believe he was a prisoner up north

James was my great-great 3rd cousin who was conscripted into the 6th on 03/14/1864. he was wounded in the face and taken prisoner on 09/25/1864 near Winchester, Va. later paroled home.

He was in the NC 6th Company H 'Caswell County Boys' He was captured on Nov 7 1863 at the Battle of Rappahannock Station and was a Pow at Point Lookout Maryland. Does anyone else have any information of the Company and also Point Lookout Maryland?

Commissioned as Captain, an officer in Company I, North Carolina 6th Infantry Regiment on 16 May 1861. Promoted to Full Major on 03 Jul 1863.

Joined at 39 yrs. old after losing two sons in the War. Stayed in Point Lookout for 1 1/2 years. Survived to live a long and prosporous life.

Killed near Winchester Oct 1, 1864

'To whom it may concern: I, Jno. K. Walker, born of Garrison and Lucinda Walker in the year of our Lord A.D. 1843, July 16th in the county of Alamace, state of North Carolina---education meager---entered the confederate army June 1st. 1861---entrained at Burlington for the seat of war June 8th. 1861---Company K. 6th N.C. Regt.---1st. Manassa battle where we first received baptism of fire---Charles Fisher, Col. commanding regiment, Gen. Bee, Brigadier. Both Fisher and Bee fell in early part of action. Participated in the majority of battles in Va., Md., Pa., and N.C. Wounded at New Market, Gettysburg, finally in the trenches in front of Petersburg Mar. 29th, 1865---removed from the field to hospital, Richmond Va. on the 30th of Mar.---remained there until June 7th. Reached home on the 8th.---remained there until Nov. 1867. Reached Brownsville, Tenn. Nov. 23rd.---have been identified with the interests of Brownsville and Haywood County to the present time. Married Miss Mattie Barclay April 2nd. 1872---five children of this union---Lonnie F. Minnie Sue, George B., Jno. R., and Mattie L. Joined the M.E. Church South during the 80's under the pastorate of Rev. Geo. Martin --- have tried to live at peace with God and my fellow man.' From the papers of his daughter, Miss Minnie Sue Walker.

My great, great grandfather was born in Caswell Co NC 5 August 1840 and died 8 June 1925 Raleigh Co WVa. Robert Thomas Wilson was listed as a private in the war records. He resided in Alamance Co., NC, prior to enlisting at the age of 20 on June 21, 1861 for the war. He was presented and accounted for until paroled at Burksville Junction, Va, April 14-17, 1865 ______NC Troops 1861-1865 Inf. Vol. 4. He was listed as a private with Co. K 6th N.C. Inf on muster roll June 20th August 31, 1861 at Camp Alamance, N.C.
