7th North Carolina Cavalry

Addison Moffett Clifford, the eleventh and youngest child of Joseph Clifford and Susannah Wells, was born on 4 February 1829 in Rowan County. During the Civil War Addison served in Company M. 7th Confederate Cavalry. In “History of Davie County,” James W. Wall reports that this unit first operated in eastern North Carolina before it was sent to Petersburg, Virginia in May 1864. In July 1864 the unit became part of the Sixteenth North Carolina Battalion, which fought with Lee until the end of the war. In “North Carolina Troops 1865 - 1865” there is the following listing: CLIFFORD, A. M. Private Transferred from Company M. 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry July 11 1864. Federal Provost Marshall records show that he was received by the Provost Marshal show that he was received by the Provost Marshal General, Washington, D. C. as a “deserter from the enemy” March 29, 1865 from the Provost Marshal, Army of the Potomac. Took the Oath of Allegiance and was provided transportation to Green County, Illinois. In her family history, Susannah Clementine Jones provided the following information about Addison: “…(Addison) served in the war of the rebellion in the Southern army. In the latter part of the war he crossed the line and went to his brother Abner Clifford’s who was then lived in Ill. After the close of the war he went back to N. 15th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry (State Service) was formed in July, 1863. For a time, it was active on the Blackwater line. It was disbanded in Chowan County in May, 1865 16th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry [also called 75th Regiment - 7th Cavalry] was formed in July, 1864, by consolidating the five North Carolina companies of the 7th Confederate Cavalry Regiment, the three North Carolina companies of the 62nd Georgia Cavalry Regiment, and Company C of the 12th North Carolina Cavalry Battalion. The 16th served along the Weldon railroad at the end of the war and was engaged in numerous skirmishes. It led the final Cavalry charge at Appomattox. This regiment was organized in January, 1865, and it disbanded after the surrendered in April, 1865 Born Jul 30, 1831 – May 29, 1893. He enlisted on Oct 1, 1861 at age 30. He served in the following units; Fifteenth Battalion Cavalry, Sixteenth Battalion Cavalry, Captain Howard's Co. (Local Defense) Cavalry, McRae's Battalion Cavalry and Captain Swindell's Company of Partisan Rangers. Padgett, Elijah Bly, Corporal Company B, 7th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry Enlisted in Clay County at age 20, July 5, 1982, for the war. Mustered in as Private and appointed Corporal February 10, 1863. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company F, 65th Regiment NC Troops (6th Regiment NC Cavalry) August 3, 1863. Co E 7th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry became Co D 6th North Carolina Cav. (65 Regt North Caolina Troops). George was captured at Jackson Mills near Kinston NC June 22/64 he was held at Fort Monroe VA, Point Lookout VA (Where he is listed as died and his company is B 6th NC Cav.) He was sent to Elmira NY and exchanged.

James was 35 when he mustered in May 1861 in Franklin, NC as a 1st Lieut. of Company H of the 16th NC Infantry. Was defeated for re-election when unit was re-organized in April 1862. James enlisted in July 1862 as a 1st Lieutenant of Company C of the 7th Cavalry. On 25 March 1864, he became captain of Company G. James served as sheriff of Macon County from 1867 to 1889.
