6th North Carolina Cavalry

Lemuel Trader Dermid was in the 6th NC Cavalry/65th State troops. His Company I think was C, but I am unsure. He was a forager and teamster. He would scout for food for the army. He did no fighting, but was attacked after the war on the way home from Appomattox by some of Sherman' men. He had nothing to ride but a mule. The Union soldiers shot him in the leg as he took off across a field and another shot broke the saddle and he fell on the ground. A negro Cavalry trooper leveled his gun at him and the Union officer told him to shoot the rebel. The Negro refused and rode off leaving him for dead. He was found by other soldiers in his regiment and spent 3 months in the hospital recovering. He lived to a ripe old age of 105.

Born in Mecklenburg Co, NC, Farmer in Ashe Co, NC,B. 30 May 1841. Enlisted in Ashe Co at age 19,July 8, 1962, for the war. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company B, 65 Reg. NC Troops (6th Regiment NC Cavalry) August 5, 1983. We have letter dated 2 Feb 1864 written to his father, Philip Hartzog, living in Ashe Co, telling him that he and his brother Daniel S. Hartzog were both in Rutherford Co, NC, but expected to be moving any day.

Born in Lincoln Co, NC, was a farmer in Ashe Co, NC when he enlisted at age 28 on July 8, 1862, along with 2 of his brothers, for the war. Reported as captured at Wilson's Gap, Tennessee on June 22,1863. Present or accounted when transferred, along with brothers to Co. B, 6th Regiment NC troops (6th Regiment NC Cavalry) on August 5, 1863. He was in Rutherford Co, NC 2 Feb 1864 when his brother Cephus wrote home to their parents.

Abraham Jones was born in 1840 in Ashe County, NC, son of Reeson Owens Jones & Polly Testerman. Enlisted as a private , promoted to 2nd Lt., Little Piney Creek District, 97th NC Militia. Commissioned as an oficer on 17 Feb 1862. Co. D, 5th Battn. NC Cav./Co. B, 65th NC Calvary. Present thru August 1863. Pres. thru 11/64. My 4th great uncle thru his sister Marilda, wife of Joseph R. Baldwin of Ashe County. Died in 1910, buried in Ashe Co. Cem. F11.

John Little was born in 1831 in Ashe County, NC, the son of Isaac Little & Elizabeth Poe. Enlisted as a Private on 8 July 1862 at the age of 29. Enlisted in Company D, 5th Battn Cavalry Regiment North Carolina on 8 Jul 1862. Transferred into 6th Cavalry Regiment North Carolina on 3 Aug 1863. Married Margaret A. Stringer, died on 2 Jun 1922 in Ashe County, NC. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandmother Lucinda Little Bare.

Extant musters for this company while serving in the 6th cover the periods from: April 30 to August 31, 1863, east Tennessee. August 31 to December 31, 1863, Rutherfordton, December 31, 1863 to April 30, 1864, eastern North Carolina. April 30 to August 31, 1864 stationed at Kinston. August 31 to October 31, 1864 stationed near Kinston. Mathias Little married Mollie Stringer, died on 27 Jun 1915 in Ashe County, NC. He was the brother of my 3rd great grandmother Lucinda Little Bare.

Drury Burnette Co C 65th Cav aka 6th NC Cavalry was captured near New Hope, NC 17 Mar 1865. Was a POW at Pt. Lookout, MD. He died on the way home after the war. His wife's name was Jane Goodson. He was a son of Fredrick Thomas Burnette, Jr. and Elizabeth Smart whose father John Smart fought at King's Mountain in the Revolutionary War. Five of Fredrick Burnette's sons died as a result of the Civil War: Berryman, John, Drury, William & Thomas Burnette.

Allen joined on 20 August 1864. He was 30 years old. He was captured on either the 13th or 14th of March 1865 and sent to New Berne, NC then to Kinston, NC and on to Point Lookout Md. He was released on 6 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog.

Born 3 Jan.1839 in Iredell County, NC and enrolled for 3 years Confederate service at Marion, NC on 14 Oct.1862. He was 22 years old, a farmer by occupation and stood 5 feet 7 inches tall. He was enrolled a private in Capt. Junius Tate's company (the Burke Rangers) which became Co.c, 5th Battalion, North carolina Cavalry.. This unit became Co. H, 6th North Carolina Cavalry on 1 May 1863 with the consolidation of the 5th and 7th battalions into a single regi,ment. Records show that he was captured about 1 Aug. 1863 on a raid under Col.Scott at Lancaster, Kentucky and was transported to and confined as a POW at Fort Delaware. He was admitted to the hospital on 7 May 1864 and died of chronic diarrhea on 12 July 1864. His name appears on a plaque at Fort Delaware commemorating Confederate soldiers who died in captivity.

George Erwin was in both E and D companies. Captured near Kingston NC June 21/64. Held at Fort Monroe and later Point Look Out.

David henery Graybeal co d.William Graybeal co d.Calvin Graybeal survived fort delaware but someone who shal be nameless says he died in a prision camp,which I know it was not New Bern n.c.I succpect it was fort delaware,because they have a listing as follows Graybill,abm,W co.d 1st mb cav.Also eli Graybeal father of Calvin m Graybeal,William,David, fought for the 97th state militia as well as his brother Joseph Graybeal.if anyone can help me as i live in columbia kentucky,503 pyles court zip 42728 it is a long way from the national archives.I am thinking that someone at the prision dident spell Williams name right.Any help will be greately appreaciated and does the 6th n.c.calvery put out a news letter and where can i get pictures of thes desendants if i can at all.thank you

In 1860, David and his parents were living in the Upper Roan Valley in Tennessee. David mustered into F Company, 6th North Carolina Cavalry, C.S.A., when it was formed from the 5th and 7th North Carolina Cavalry Battalions on August 3, 1863, with the rank of Sergeant. (NOTE: Despite the fact the this regiment was not formed until August 1863, his service records shows that he was serving with that unit from November 1, 1862, to February 28, 1863. He is also shown as receiving at $50.00 bounty and $120.00 for the use and risk of his horse, with an additional $48.00 for the use and risk of his horse at the rate of 40 cents per day.)
