Served with 140th NYVI from formation until the Battle of Cold Harbor. During the battle his company and part of another company were acting as skermishers at Bethesda Church. They were drawn into a trap by the Confederates and many from the Company were captured. He was sent first to Libby Prison in Richmond, and then Andersonville. He survived Andersonville, and was sent to Florence Prison after Andersonville closed. when he was released at the end of the war, he spent time in the hospital in Washington and Baltimore. He actually returned to Rochester before the Regiment. On the night the regiment returned to Rochester there was a massive thunderstorm. His house was hit by lightning which entered a window, ran accross the ceiling, exited another window, ran down the side of the house and ended in a cistern!The regiments return made page one of all the Rochester newspapers. Seilers lighning story made page 2!
