78th New York Infantry

The "78th Highlanders" Enlisted in the 78th NY Infantry in 1861 in New York City at the age of 36. His records state that he was a Colour Bearer. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863 and Peach Tree Creek, July 20, 1864. Transferred with his regiment to the 102nd NY Infantry by consolidation, July 12, 1864. Mustered out with his Co on July 21, 1865.

Enlisted as a Private on 28 October 1861 at the age of 19. Mustered in Company E, 78th Infantry Regiment New York on 29 October 1861. Wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. Transferred into Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 15 January 1864. Discharged from Regiment U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps on 31 January 1866.

Enlisted as a Private on 5 February 1864 at the age of 18. Transferred into Company K, 102nd Infantry Regiment New York on 12 July 1864.

Enlisted as a Musician on 16 January 1862 at the age of 17. Mustered in Company E, 78th Infantry Regiment New York on 13 February 1862. Transferred into Company K, 102nd Infantry Regiment New York on 12 July 1864.

Enlisted 02 DEC 1861. Promoted to Sergeant-Major of the regiment on 24 APR 1862. Fought at Battle of Cedar Mountain, VA, 09 AUG 1862, then at Second Bull Run on 30 AUG 1862. Battlefield commission to Captain at Antietam on 17 SEP 1862. Honorably Discharged on 04 APR 1863.

Jordan B. Foster was my great-grandfather's brother. He enlisted in Co. K of the 78th New York Infantry in February of 1862, and died of typhoid fever on August 7, 1862, at Little Washington, Virginia. His brothers Nathan W. and Herschel A. also served in the Civil War. I have typed transcripts of letters from Jordan, as well as other Civil War family letters and other family history information.

No family notes have been added.

David Odren is my G G Grandfather. He enlisted from Branch Co, MI in Mar 1862 when he was 38 years old. Even though he is not found in the Soldiers and Sailors site he is carried in a special census of Jun 1890 of Branch Co, MI with his widow, Caroline Reynolds (remarried).
