Sgt. Mason served with the regiment from April 1861 to October 1862. He was wounded at Malvern Hill and noted in dispatches by Lt. Col. Rice. He was discharged for promotion to another regiment.

Enlisted as a Private on 19 August 1861 at the age of 20. Enlisted in Company C, 44th Infantry Regiment New York on 05 September 1861. Transfered on 05 October 1861 from company C to company K. Killed Company C, 44th Infantry Regiment New York on 01 July 1862 in Malvern Hill, VA

Enlisted 1862,killed Jul 1863, in battle at Little Roundtop, Gettysburg, PA. Age 18

He was my great great grandfather. He and his brother served on Little Roundtop. He survived the war. He came to Baltimore in 1879 to work - where he died in his sleep. He was buried in Baltimore and then reinterred in Albany Rural Cemetery, Albany, NY. He joined with the Albany Rural School. My great great grandfather was shot and killed on Little Roundtop and is buried in the Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburgh, PA.

My great great uncle, Leander Turner Burnham served with the 44th NY INfantry Co E. He and my great great grandfather served on Little Roundtop. Leander was shot in the chest and killed. He was first buried on Jacob Weikert farm and then reinterred in the Soldier's National Cemetery after it opened it November, 1863. They were from Albany, NY and joined with the Albany Rural School.

Mustered 28 AUG 1862. In six battles. Wounded before Petersburg, VA 22 JUN 1864 and placed in hospital at that time. Tranfered on 24 SEP 1864 to Co. A 44 Batallion. Tranfered to Co. E 146 NYV on 6 OCT 1864. Height 5'9'. Light hair and complexion. Grey blue eyes.
