Born: June 12,1839 Tarrytown,NY Died: October 23,1924 Tarrytown,NY Enlisted: May 20, 1861 Tarrytown,NY for 2 years Mustered In: May 31,1861 at New Dorp, Staten Island Mustered Out: June 9,1863 at NYC Member of Rescue Engine Fire Company #1 before his elistment.It was disbanded when all 38 members enlisted under the call by Lincoln. Story from History of the Tarrytowns: Charles Hartung a jeweler also from Tarrytown and CO.H was killed at the Battle of Gaines Mill, VA serving under Gen. McClellan sometime between June 26, and July 3, 1862 a bullet pierced his chest and he crashed to the ground, Frank Taxter carried him to a shady place. During the last few minutes of his life he gave Taxter his silver watch and told him to tell his mother how he died.

Age 37. A resident of Healdsburg, California. Travelled to New York at the start of the war and offered his services. He enrolled on May 22nd, 1861 and mustered in as Colonel May 31. He was commissioned Colonel June 20th. Commanded his regiment at the Battle of 1st Manassas. He was wounded while leading his men at the Battle of South Mountain September 14th, 1862, and died of his wounds on October 21st. He was so loved by the citizens of Healdsburg that they paid to have his body shipped all the way home to California. He is buried in Healdsburg, one of the only men to be killed in action during against the south and still be buried in California.
