26th New York Cavalry

Wife''s 3rd great grandfather. Born in Buckfield, Oxford Co., ME c. 1835. Lived in Stoughton, MA area in 1860 and was a bootmaker by trade. Served briefly in the 29th Mass. Inf. early in the war. Enlisted as part of the Massachusetts Battalion that made up this regiment raised to guard the VT/NY and Canadian border from those pesky canucks and cold weather loving rebs.... Discharged June 30, 1865. Kept saber and carbine when discharged (billed accordingly!). Returned to shoemaking after the war and died in the Stoughton area about 1900.

Pervious service with Company I of the 10th US Infantry. He reenlisted with Company G of the 26th New York Cavalry. The roster of the 26th supply this information: Enlisted, January 28, 1865, at Plattsburgh; mustered, in as private, Co. G, February 11, 1865, to serve one year; appointed sergeant, January 30, 1865; first sergeant, April 6, 1865; mustered out with company, July 6, 1865, at Plattsburgh, N. Y. He would die in Washington, D. C., in 1912 and be buried at the United States Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery.
