19th New York Cavalry

Mustered in as Corporal. Awarded Congressional Medal of Honor, Date of issue: 3 May 1865. Place and date: At Five Forks, Va., 1 April 1865. Citation: While advancing in front of his company and alone, he found himself surrounded by the enemy. He accosted a nearby enemy flag bearer demanding the surrender of the group. His effective firing of one shot so demoralized the unit that it surrendered with flag.

Emery was the brother of Charles henry Crocker who was with the 1st NY Dragoons

Nathan enlisted in the 130th NY Infantry on Aug. 16, 1862. He stayed with the regiment through its evolution from infantry to mounted infantry to 19th NY Cavalry to 1st NY Dragoons. He was captured as a sergeant of the First New York Dragoons on or about Oct. 17, 1863, and sent to prison in Richmond. In that Richmond prison, he had a brief encounter with Robert Knox Sneden, who wrote about the encounter in his book 'Eye of the Storm.' Sneden went to Andersonville and survived. Nathan died in Richmond. Nathan's father served in the 104th NY Infantry and the Veteran Reserve Corps.

This company was the outcome of the 130th NY Vol Inf Reg becoming a mounted unit. It was later redesignated as the 1st NY Vol Dragoons Reg. See Notes there.

Born in 1843 in Naples, Ontario County,New York. He a member of the 130th as it became a Cavalry unit. He was at the surrender at Appomattox. He is buried at Canseraga Cemetery, Allegany County, N. Y.
