5th New York Cavalry

Enlisted October 21, 1862 in Troy, NY. Assigned to Troop M. Promoted to Chief Bugler, 5th New York Cavalry July 22, 1863. Died of disease, Andersonville, GA July 18, 1864. Buried under Marker # 3552, under the name L. Edmonds.

Enlisted late 1863 at Crown Point NY, rank private, rank corporal when mustered out in July 1865. Spent most of his later life in Midwestern Branch veterans home. Listed as blind in one eye and partially in the other due to cartridge explosion. Unknown if this happened during the war. Died in the veterans home on Oct 20, 1931.

Alfred was born in Rochester N.Y. 4 Jun 1827. Moved to Painted Post N.Y. while young. He married Caroline Carl and they had 6 children all born in N.Y. He enlisted 27 Aug 1861 at Olean, Cattarugus, N.Y. After the War he returned to Olean and in 1867 went to Chillicothe, Missouri with the railroad and lived there the remainder of his life employed by the railroad. For about 13 years from 1880 till 1893 he was Station Master at the Grand Old station in Kansas City Missouri. He returned to Chillicothe because of ill health and died 1 Mar 1894 and is buried in Edgewood Cemetery there along with his wife Caroline.

Enlisted as a Sergeant on 23 September 1861 at the age of 27. Reduced to Ranks. Received a disability discharge on 9 March 1862 at Annapolis, MD.

Johnson was a resident of Apalachin, Owego County, NY when he enlisted. His wife was Almira Hedglyn and they had three children together. Johnson served with the 5th NY Cavalry until he was captured at Hagerstown, MD in 1863. He was sent to Andersonville, and died there in 1864. There is a marker at Andersonville for him, and also a gravestone for him in Apalachin, NY.
