Cornelius was born in Ireland in 1834. By 1860, he was living in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ. He enlisted in the 28th NJ Volunteers, a 9-month regiment, on 26 August 1862. He was killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg, 13 Dec. 1862. His regiment was in the first wave in the attack on Marye's Heights. He left a widow and three children, all under age 5, including my great-grandmother.

Enlisted in the 28th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 01 September 1862 for a period of 9 months. Mustered in 22 September 1862. Promoted to corporal 18 November 1862. The 28th New Jersey fought at Fredericksburg as part of the 'Gibraltar' Brigade along with the 24th NJ, the 4th OH, the 8th OH, the 14th IN, and the 7th WV under Brigadier General Nathan Kimball. Mustered out 06 July 1863.

Reported MIA at battle of Chancellorsville VA 3 May 1863 Presumed dead.

Josiah Pateman, seventy-eight years old, died at the residence of his son, David Pateman, 503 State street, last night. He is survived by two sisters and one brother and three daughters and one son. He was a veteran of the civil war, having been a member of Company I, 28th New Jersey Volunteers, at that time. The funeral will be held from his late residence, 503 State street, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. L. Lancaster, rector of St. Peters Episcopal church, will officiate. Timothy, younger brother of William Thorn, Jr. was mustered into Co. K, 28th NJ Infantry along with his brother. Like his brother, he survived the war.

My Great-Grandfather was born in South Amboy, NJ in 1835. He was mustered into the 28th NJ, a 9-month Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in September, 1862, and mustered out in June of 1863. He died in Elizabeth, NJ in 1897.
