Theodore Wilhelm enrolled in Battery A, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery on October 11, 1864. He was mustered into service at Newark by Capt. Mills. He was discharged when the battery mustered out at Trenton on June 22, 1865. He was born in Hannover, the capital city of the Kingdom of Hanover, in 1832. It is reported that he may have served in the military in Hanover. There is no record of when he came to America. He is listed on the muster roll as being from Germany. After the war he moved to Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois where he married Nancy Quick in June of 1867. They moved to Perry County, Missouri where he taught school the 1867-1868 term as the first teacher of Salem Lutheran School in what is now the town of Farrar. He reportedly moved around a lot from 1868 until he died in St. Louis, Missouri in May of 1880. He was buried near Belleville, Illinois.
