Christopher passed while in service with the 5th. Family lore states that Christopher passed either at Kentucky or Louisiana. I find no record of the 5th being in Kentucky but I do find it was in Louisiana during 1864. If anyone has more details concerning his date, place, cause of death we would appreciate knowing. I am searching the campaign sites in Louisiana in the hope of finding the cemetery where he is buried and his gravesite. We would like to visit Louisiana and his grave to make arrangements for headstone repairs if needed. Christopher is my wife's 4th G-Grandfather. Thanks much, Mike Cooper Seattle, WA

Seeking information on Gustave Brackelsberg. Our limited oral history says that he served in Sioux Uprising and Civil War. Apparently was wounded some where along the way. We are interested in finding out where he served, service dates, battles if any, and where and when he was wounded.

Ernst Kunze mustered in as Private Co. D on March 5th 1862. Engaged in actions at Abercrombie, Dakota Territory Sept. 3+6/1862, Jackson, Mississippi May 14/1863, Siege of Vicksburg 1863, Richmond, Louisiana June 14/1863. Ernst immigrated from Germany in 1853 with his wife, one son, and his Father-in-law. After briefly stopping in Wisconsin, the family ended up in Carver County. Ernst was a Carpenter and Farmer by trade. He went on furlough after the Battle of Vicksburg and only made it as far as Odin, Ill. where I believe Cholera finally took his life. He left 4 boys and a grieving wife and his burial as far as I know has never been found. Ernst Kunze is my great-great grandfather.

Michael Herrmann was my great-great grandfather. He was wounded on December 16, 1864 at the Battle of Nashville.

Enlisted, Feb 1862, Company E, Fifth MN Infantry, Carver County resident at time of enlistment. Involved in many prominent battles. Wounded in left knee at Corinth, 4 Oct 1862, and taken to St.Louis Hospital (6 months). Honorably discharged at Vicksburg (for disability), 20 Jan 1863. Later re-enlisted (Mississippi Marine Brigade).Returned to Carver Co. until 1869, then moved to Kelso Twp, Sibley Co. where he farmed.

Am trying to clarify some confusion over his wounding, discharge and death. He was wounded in Texas in 1862 according to some sources but other sources never have the 5th MN in Texas during the 1862 time period.

Johan enlisted in Goodhue County in 1862. He was 18 years old. He died July 16, 1863 at Vicksburg. His last name could have been Helle and his middle name Josiason.

Peder was 24 when he enlisted in 1862. He died in Memphis, Tennessee on January 1,1863

Joseph enlisted with his younger brother in the Minnesota 5th Infantry on 15 Feb 1862 in Wabasha County. He was taken POW at Elk River, Mississippi on 23 Aug 1863. He was later transferred to Andersonville Prison, where he died on 13 Aug 1864 of diarrhea. He is buried in Andersonville Cemetery, grave #5460.

Tinkey Conrad Myers (aka Conrad Tinkey) enlisted in the Minnesota 5th Infantry in Wabasha County with his older brother Joseph on 15 Feb 1862. He was mustered out as a Corporal at Demopolis, Alabama on 6 Sep 1865.

OLESON, Ole MN 5th Inf Co G. Residence: Goodhue County, Minnesota. Born in Norway. Civil War: Age 21. Enrolled 5 Feb 1862. Mustered 24 Apr 1862. Private. Discharged from the service for disability 14 Nov 1862. Sources: (MINN p257) (MCIW p294) He later used last name: ARNEGARD, from Norway farm, moving to Traill Co., ND, where he died 13 Nov 1896.

Born in Germany in 1837 and arrived in US in 1852. Farmed in Scott County, Minnesota before and after the War. He was wounded during the Battle of Nashville. He was a member of the Von Minden GAR Post # 105 in Jordan, Minnesota. He was Post Commander of the 105 for some time. Buried at Calvary Cemetery, Jordan, MN

My gt gt gt grandpa mustered in 30April1862. He mustered out due to illness 2September1863. He reenlisted into Company H of the 11th Minn Vol Inf in 1864.
