He enlisted at Albany, NY on July 15, 1861 as a Private and was mustered in to Company G, 22nd New York Infantry Regiment. He was discharged for disability June 5, 1862 at Falls Church, Virginia. He re-enlisted on July 22, 1863 as a Private and was mustered in to Company C, 4th Vermont Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Full Corporal on December 28, 1864 and was mustered out on July 13, 1865.

William Russell was mustered in with the original company F. He is now resting in the Episcopal Cemetary in Rockingham Vermont. I have most of his letters to his wife if anyone has any questions about the life in this infantry, I may be able to help answer some questions.
