LaFayette enlisted in the 3rd N.Y.Light Artillery, Co. B on September 29, 1862 at Auburn, New York. His service was short as he became ill with Typhoid fever while enroute from New Berne, North Carolina to join the Battery. He was admitted to the Post Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia on December 1, 1863 where he died December 13, 1863. LaFayette is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
