Thomas was captured on 19 May 1864 and subsequently died at Andersonville Prison, Georgia on 23 August 1864. During the Spotsylvania Court House battles the 6th NYHA was detailed as Infantry to the Artillery Reserve.
He is buried in grave #6601 at Andersonville National Cemetery.
