Heinrich (Henry) Mueting - Private |
Heinrich (Henry) Mueting enlisted with the 1st Nebraska Infantry in Omaha, Nebraska on 11 June 1861. The unit shipped out under the command of Lt. Colonel William McCord, initially to patrol Missouri and Arkansas. It was soon ordered to join with General Ulysses S. Grant in Tennessee and participated in the successful capture of the Confederate Fort Donelson. From Fort Donelson, the troops under Grant headed south and soon became engaged in the Battle of Shiloh on April 6 and 7, 1862. Sadly, Private Mueting fell ill with "inflammation of the lungs" according to his military records. Private Mueting would pass away aboard the hospital ship Horizon on 26 March 1862 at Crump's Landing in Hardin County, Tennessee just north of the Shiloh Battlefield.

4th Great Uncle - Private, Company B, 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Born on November 27, 1833 in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, and Enlisted and Mustered In on June 11, 1861 at the age of 27 while residing in Omaha, Nebraska. Regiment fought at the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee on February 15, 1862 and at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee from April 6-7, 1862. Deserted on February 22, 1863 at Arcadia, Missouri. Died on May 17, 1890 in Lebanon, St. Clair County, Illinois. Brother of Union soldiers Ferdinand Seitz, 18th Wisconsin, Joseph Seitz, 26th Wisconsin, and Charles Seitz, 39th Wisconsin.

J.J. Tanner was my great great grandfather. He immigrated to the United States in 1857 from Switzerland. He enlisted in the 1st Nebraska Infantry in Omaha, Nebraska on June 11, 1861 and served untile August 14, 1864. He fought in the battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh.
