James F Merrill - Private
James was one of three brothers from Windsor, Maine to serve in the 21st. All survived, but contended with debilitating illness the rest of their lives. He was injured in a fall soon after arriving in Baton Rouge, and probably missed the fighting at Port Hudson. He and fellow private, Isaac Marsh were on their way to attend another sick soldier, Rowland Black, when Merrill fell while crossing a stream injuring his right knee. The sick soldier, Black, died later that night. James was my Great, Great, Great uncle, and brother of my Great, Great Grandfather, Leonard Merrill, of the 2nd ME Cavalry. All told, six Merrill brothers from this Windsor familly served in the Civil War, all surviving.

Melville Merrill - Private
Melville was one of three Windsor Merrill brothers to serve in this regiment. See also James and Enoch Merrill. Melville volunteered to join a mixed unit for what was to be the last union attack on Port Hudson, but surrender of the confederates obviated the need. Melville and his brother Enock were discharged from this 9 month unit and later joined the 2nd Maine Cavalry with my Great, Great Grandfather, Leonard Merrill.
