Daniel W. JAMES, b. abt 1824, IN; d. 16 Dec 1862, bur. Missouri River near Cairo, IL. Married 24 Jul 1842, MO, to Martha BAILEY, b. 24 Jul 1824, TN; d. 14 Jan 1899, Chase, Rice, KS. National Archives Microfilm No.M541 roll 13.
Enlisted 24 Nov 1861, on behalf of his elder brother William G. James, who was drafted. William, ran a farm in Dallas Co. IA, and tended to his invalid wife. According to federal law, one could be released from service by providing a substitute. Daniel agreed to go in his brother''s place, in exchange for a promise that each of his children would be granted sections of land in Rice County, Kansas.
Daniel died 16 Dec 1862 from a ''camp illness'' while enroute by troop-boat from Cairo, IL to Columbus, KY. Burial in Missouri River near Cairo, IL.

My Great Grandfather.
Born 9/11/1840. Enlisted 8/15/1862 in Lake City, Iowa.
Captured 10/5/1864 at the Battle of Allatoona Pass (GA), imprisoned at Andersonville Prison--survived.
Died 10/7/1923, buried in Hardy Nebraska (Nuckolls County).
His brother Charles Beebe was also a member of Company E of 39th Iowa. Charles was killed at Allatoona Pass.
