He enlisted at Indianapolis, Indiana on July 24, 1861 for a term of 3 years. He was discharged from the Army at Baton Rouge, Louisiana on January 13, 1866 when his company was discharged from active service. At the time of discharge he was a corporal.

According to his volunteer re-enlistment paper dated January 1, 1864. William mustered out of the military January 13, 1866 with the rank of 1st Sergeant. William was the brother of George Monroe Scott who also served in Company H.
