The little I know about my Great Uncle is that he is listed as a deserter after the Battle of Stones River. However, a year later, he is a soldier with a New York Infantry Regiment. Can anyone explain to me how this could come about ? Thank you.

John A Brown - Sergeant |
John Brown joined the 88th Infantry, Illinois in Sept 1861. He was wounded in the thigh at the battle of Chickamauga. He was in the First Brigade, Second Division, Fourth Army Corps in Sept 1863. He was not able to walk well after being wounded so was put in charge of keeping the cattle.
He returned to Niles, Illinois after the war in 1867 and lived with his wife and children. He eventually moved to and died and was buried in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.
