Enlisted as a private in company K. Slightly wounded in the right thigh at Antietam. Returned to service, promoted to corporal. Reenlisted into the 1st De. Veteran Volunteer Corp. and was wounded in the left arm in the Battle of the Wilderness. Returned to service, promoted to sergeant and served in the regimental color guard. Jonathon was from a farming family and lived near Hazlettville, Delaware. He entered the service with his brother Thomas. Their names have been spelled Bedwell and Bettle in various records. They are listed on the Delaware monument in Gettysburg.
