I William Henry Johnson - Unknown
I am researching William Henry Johnson, reported to be a member of the 8th Connecticut, present at the battles of Bull Run, Roanoke Island, and New Bern, NC (March 14, 1862), after which he received a medical discharge. Historian Noah Andre Trudeau credits him with being a black man who was able to cross the color line and enlist in the 8th CT Infantry before the Emancipation Proclamation opened the war to black troops. In all likelihood, the military records would list him as “white.” I would appreciate any additional information. Thank you.
