11th / 17th Arkansas Infantry (Consolidated)

b. Oct 12 1831 Wilkes County, North Carolina. d. Apr 06 1895 in Arkansas. Son of Thomas Carlton and Elizabeth Land.She was a daughter of my 4x gr grandparents,Jonathan Land & Elizabeth Isbell Land,sister to my 3x gr,grandfather,James Linville Land. Enlisted as a Pvt. in CO C of the 11th and 17th Arkansas Consolidated Regiments 7 Jan 1863 at Washington, AR. His CMSR shows him on sick leave in 1863. May,1865 he surrendered with his unit at Citronella, AL. Paroled at Jackson, MS.on 13 May 1865.

Fife Major, Co C, 11/17th Arkansas Infantry. Fought at Pea Ridge. Captured at Island # 10, sent to Lake Butler, Illinois prison camp. Escaped July 19, 1862. One version of his death was that he was killed by a sentry when he returned to his unit after a furlough in 1864. He was 5’6’ tall, blue eyes, sandy hair. Died April 1864.

George was born 17 May 1847 in Franklin, Izard Ark. He was about 14 years old when he joined this unit at Little Rock, Ark. He has 2 cards in his archival file. He was the husband of my 4th cousin Martha Emiline Thomas 1846 - 1932. George survived the war and died 19 Nov. 1894. He is buried at Bear Creek Cemetery, Sharp Co. Arkansas.

My G-G Grandfather was the quartermaster for company H. under Griffith. He was orphaned and I am on a search to find his parents, and Any picture of him.
