' Company I (1st), (Captain David C. Dunn's Company also known as the Floyd Blues) was organized July 5, 1861 as Co. G. (1st), 50th Virginia Infantry. The company was reorganized April 1,1862 at Abingdon, Virginia and transferred to the 63rd. Part of the company were holdovers and part were recruits. The company was disbanded about January 1863 when some transferred to other companies Captain David C. Dunn, company commander and enlistment officer was elected Lieutenant Colonel on May 10, 1863. The second commander, James R. Deadmore resigned September 5, 1862 per his service record. David Dunn was actively recruiting a Battalion, which he was to command, but plans changed and his units were incorporated into the 63rd. Information from the compiled service record of the 50th Virginia, give the following information about this company's activities for the first year of the war. The company mustered in with the 50th on July 5, 1861 at Abingdon. The first muster roll covers the period July 5 to September 1, 1861, dated September 5, 1861 at Camp Gauley, Nicholas County, Virginia. Had engagement with Yankees under notorious Col. Tyler of fur trade notoriety. It was about 6 o'clock in the morning of August 26 at Cross Lanes when we took their right flank pouring our shot into them. Drove them in utter confusion to the Mountain and capturing many. The killed & prisoners [were] near 130, taking wagons, ambulance 4 horse guns to us prizes. Marched from Camp Jackson, Wytheville via Newbern, Old Sweet Springs, White Sulphur, Lewisburg, Big Sewell Mountain to Gauley River in Nicholas County, distance about 300 miles. The second muster for service while in the 50th, gives the following information in the notes. This muster was for the period September 1 1861 to January 1, 1862, and taken at Dublin Depot.
Was in the battle of Carnifex Ferry on September 10, 1861 enemy under Genl. Rosecranz. Suffered no loss in killed or wounded, retreated leaving 26 rifles all our tents & camp equipment. Having such a large number of sick it was impossible to haul or carry them. Company Detailed to guard Blue Sulphur Hosp. on the 18th of Sept. Ordered to White Sulphur Hosp. as a guard at that point on 1 Oct. & remained at that bet (sic) until ordered to Meadow Bluff to drive back some Dutch Cavalry. Returned to White Sulphur Springs & was ordered to Dublin Depot as guard to that point on the 2d of January 1862. We had in charge 3 Yankee prisoners taken at Meadow Bluff. Officers: David C. By Dec. of 1862 he was listed as a POW of the North. On Nov. 15, 1863 he was paroled and ordered not to travel south of the Ohio River. He later moved to Nebraska with his brother William, married and raised a family. He died on July 21, 1920 at the age of 80 and is buried in the Oxford, Nebraska Cemetery.

John Patterson Allison - Corporal

This was my great, great, great grandfather. He enlisted as a Private on May 6th 1861 with the CSA 63rd Virginia Infantry Company F. In August of 1964 he transferred to Company K where he was promoted to 1st Corporal. From February 1865 until June of 1865 he was a P.O.W. at Point Lookout. He survived the was and passed away of Cancer on August 2nd 1912.
