5th Virginia Infantry

We know that Grandpa James was captured in the Battle of Waynesboro, Va approx. 1864. If anyone has any more information, please feel free to e-mail this to us.

-Enrolled for active service June 14, 1861, age 22 at Winchester, VA. -Mustered in at a camp near Manassas, VA by Lt. Col. Harman on July 29,1861. -Returned to Winchester Hospital listed as sick sometime thereafter. -Officially detailed from Company A to Winchester Hospital from about October to August 3, 1863. -Captured by Federal 8th VA Cavalry on August 3, 1863 at hospital in Winchester. -Sent to Wheeling, VA as POW (Atheneum Prison; sp?) on Aug. 6, 1863. -Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio on Aug. 11, 1863. -Detailed as hospital nurse by the Secretary of War in October 1863. -Transfered on Feb. 29, 1864 to Fort Delaware, arriving on March 4, 1864. -Signed Oath of Allegence to the US at Fort Delaware on June 15, 1865 and was released to return to Frederick County, VA.

1st Rockbridge Artillery - Hospitalized for hernia while moving cannon at Winchester, VA 5th VA INF, Co. C - Wounded on 3 May 1863 in left thigh at Chancellorsville, VA 20th VA CAV, Co. K - Promoted to SGT, Lost Mississippi Rifle, Reported to Federal Provost Marshall at Clarksburg, WV. Took Oath and was released 14 Dec 1864. Age 21

Bailey served in the Confederate Army during the War Between The States. He enlisted April 17, 1861 in Staunton, Virginia, and was mustered into service at Harper's Ferry, May 1, 1861. He was present with his unit, the 5th Virginia Infantry, Co. C - Mountain Guard, at First Manassas (Bull Run), second Manassas and Kernstown. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1861, and was promoted again to Sergeant on April 16, 1862. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863 the last day of the battle. He is buried in the Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in Parnassas, Virginia.

Robert enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 16, 1862 in Staunton, Virginia and was mustered in as a Private in the 5th Virginia Infantry, Co., C - Mountain Guard. He was present with his unit at Kernstown, and was captured during a skirmish at New Creek, Virginia (now West Virginia) on January 8, 1863 and sent to the Union prison at Wheeling, Virginia (WVA) and then on January 13, 1863 he was transferred to a prison camp in Camp Chase, Ohio. Records show that his brother Thomas was imprisoned with him at the same time. He and his brother were both released from Camp Chase on July 7, 1863 after having given their parole. His whereabouts for the remainder of the war are unknown. He is buried in Thornrose Cemetery, in Staunton, Virginia.

Francis Preston Thomason (1834-1895) enlisted at Rude's Hill; and marched from there to the 1st Battle of Kernstown; he was wounded twice (luckily missing both Antietam & Gettysburg), but then was captured at the Point of the Salient at Chancellorsville and sent to Ft. Delaware. He is buried in Augusta County, VA

POW at Spotsylvania 12-May-1864.

At the start of the Civil War Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army at West View, Augusta County, Virginia on April 29, 1861 and was mustered in as a Private in the 5th Virginia Infantry, Co. F - West View Infantry. He was present with his unit at First Manassas (Bull Run). He was captured in 1863 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia), and was sent to a Union prison at Wheeling, Virginia (WVA) and then to prison at Camp Chase, Ohio on January 13, 1863. Records show that his brother Robert was imprisoned with him at the same time. He and his brother were both released from Camp Chase on July 7, 1863 after having given their parole. His whereabouts for the remainder of the war are unknown. He is buried in Boston, Massachusetts.

This soldier was in the Botetourt command and was wounded in battle. His life was saved because the bullet that hit him was deflected by a New Testament (Bible) that was in his shirt pocket. If anyone has further info on this person please pass it on.

Pvt. Ausbert George Lewis VanLear enlisted in early 1862, leaving a wife and three children behind in Staunton, VA. He fought all the major battles through Chancellorsville where he was shot through the right knee and his leg was amputated. After the war he went to University of Virginia and University of Maryland and obtained a degree in Medicine. He was a practicing physician in Staunton, VA until early 1900's, all while wearing a wooden leg. He also fathered three more children after the war. The family has all his correspondence from mid-1840 until 1890's.

Paroled at Appomattox 4/9/65. He was great great grandfather. From Campbell County.

This Richard Vance was from the Paynesville area of McDowell County (was Logan Co), who enlisted soon after he was released from Camp Chase in Ohio, where he was a POW. Richard was captured, stating he fought for the 188th Virginia and was from McDowell County. In November 1863, after nearly a year as a POW and released, he enlisted with Capt. P.K. McComas of Logan County, in the 5th Virginia State Line, Company I, where he subsequently died January 26, 1863, in Wytheville, Virginia.
