Ashton A Jackson - 4th Corporal
|
Ashton A. Jackson enlisted in C Co. 3rd VA. Inf. Regt. on 23 May 1861 at Dinwiddie Courthouse, Va. He was promoted to 4th Corporal on 15 Oct. 1861. He was killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill 27 June 1862.
He is buried in the Tyre B. Jackson(his father's)family burial plot at the Blandford Church Cemetery in Petersburg,Va. His brothers John Edward Jackson; my maternal Great-Great Grandfather, and William Andrew Jackson are also buried there. They served with the 12th Va. Inf. Regt.
He also had two half-brothers; George T., and Lt. Thomas Branch Jackson who also served in C Co. 3rd Va. Inf. Regt. Both of these brothers were captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pa. after Pickett's Charge on Cemetery Ridge. Lt. Thomas Branch Jackson was wounded in both legs.

|
George T. Jackson enlisted in C Co. 3rd Va. Inf. Regt. on 9 Aug.1862 in Richmond, Va. He served in this same unit with his brother Lt. Thomas Branch Jackson. His half brother 4th Cpl. Ashton A. Jackson was also in this same unit, however he was killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill on 27 June 1862.
George was wounded in fighting near Richmond,Va.; after the withdrawal of the Army of Northern Virginia, from the Battle of 2nd Manassas(2nd Bull Run). He was also suppossedly captured with his brother Lt. Jackson; at the Battle of Gettysburg,Pa. after their assault on Cemetery Ridge in Pickett's Charge.
George was killed on 2 Apr. 1865 at the Petersburg, Va. Fairgrounds.

Thomas Branch Jackson - 3rd Lieutenant
|
Thomas Branch Jackson enlisted in C Co. 3rd VA. Inf. Regt. on 18 Mar. 1862 at Camp Pemberton?,Va. He was born 20 Apr. 1843, therefore he was 18 years old when he enlisted. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 23 Oct. 1862; and subsequently to 3rd Lieutenant on 1 Jan. 1863, after the Battle of Fredericksburg.
He served in this same unit with his brother George T Jackson; and half-brother Ashton A. Jackson, who was killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill on 27 June 1862. Both Lt. Jackson and his brother George; were captured at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pa. on 3 July 1863, while participating in Pickett's Charge on Cemetery Ridge.
Lt. Jackson was wounded in both legs, during this assault. He was imprisoned at Johnson Island in Lake Erie; which was a Federal prison for captured Confederate Officers. After the war ended Lt. Jackson moved to Norfolk, Va. where he worked for the Norfolk and Western Railway. Lt. Thomas Jackson became Adjutant of the Pickett-Buchanan Camp of United Confederate Veterans, when it was established in Norfolk, Va. in 1883. He died in Norfolk, Va. on 23 Oct. 1925.

Co A, Third Virginia. (3rd Virginia renamed from 3rd Georgia)SECOND LIEUTENANT Hamilton, John A., joined for duty and enrolled at Pendleton, April 14, 1861; mustered into Confederate service, at Columbia, June 7, 1861.
The 3rd Georgia Infantry was organized in late April 1871. In the Spring of 1862, the 3rd Georgia Infantry returned to Virginia and joined the Army of Northern Virginia. It served in that way for the remainder of the war. The 3rd GA participated in more than fifty engagements during it’s career. Enlisted April for 12 month’s ; reenlisted in Virginia 1862; surrendered Appomattox Court House. Officers Cpt J.R. Griffin, 1st Lt. J.A.Hamilton, 2nd Lt. Bichat LeSueur, 3rd Lt J. N. Smith, 1st Sgt R. W. Allen.

An examination of the paroles granted at Appomattox Court House shows that the Third Georgia Infantry surrendered more than two hundred thirty-five officers and enlisted men. The Third Georgia was one of the largest units to lay down arms at Appomattox Court House.
