Drafted in the summer of 1863. Was assigned to the 6th Vermont, then engaged at Spotsylvania. Just four days after joining the command, on May 18, 1864, he was killed by a shell fragment which ''passed through his body''.

Promoted Sergeant 30 March 1863.Wounded in action 10 July 1863, Battle of Funkstown, Maryland.In general hospital July- October 1863. Returned to company November 1863. Wounded in action 1 June 1864 at Battle of Cold Harbor,Virginia. Died of wounds 3 June 1864. Originally buried at 6 Corps field hospital near J. Leary's farm, Cold Harbor.In 1866,remains moved to Cold Harbor National Cemetery, Mechanicsville,Virgina.
