He enlisted 2 Mar 1862 in Co B. 20th Tx Infantry at Anderson by Lt. Foster. This regiment was formed in the spring of 1862 for costal defense of the coastline around Galveston, Texas. He slipped away from camp and had to be brought back via guard on 5 Oct 1864. It bis not known if he saw any action. The Regiment surrendered 2 June 1865.

Richard was born in Greene Co. Georgia. He was abt 31 years old when he enlisted 1 June 1861 in Labadie's Rifles Vol Co. organized at Union Hill. This became attached on 5 Jan 1863 to Co E 23rd Brigade Brig. Gen. Jno. Sayles. He was then transferred to Co C 20th Texas Infantry. This unit did not leave Texas but was assigned to guard the coast of Texas. Some were trained in Heavy Artillery. He has 7 cards in his archival files. he was granted furloughs twice and in March of 1865 was assigned to the Regimental Quarter Master for fatigue duty. He died 12 June 1897 and is buried beside his wife at Old Independence Cem. Washington Co. Texas. He was the husband of my 3rd cousin 4 x removed

Young was born in 1827. He enlisted 1st in Co E 23 Brigade of Gen. Jno Sayles at Brenham, Texas. on 5 Jan 1863 and was transferred to Co C 20th Texas Infantry. This unit did not leave Texas and was assigned to guard the Texas coastline. The only battle engaged in was at Galvaslton, Texas. Some members were trained in the use of Heavy Artillery. He married Amanda Malvina Zimmerman on 25 April 1850.

Great,Great Grandfather. Enlisted Co. E, 20th Texas Infantry, Feb.7, 1862 to the end of the war, sworn in March, 1862 at Houston, joined Regt. at Hempstead for training. Participated in battle of Galveston. Applied for and received pension for service, Sept. 1899. Application was witnessed by S.B. Tackaberry and W.L. Scurlock, both having served in Co. E, 20th Texas. ' He was a good soldier and never absent without leave.' S.B.Tackaberry states, 'William Barrett came with Tackaberry's family from New York about 1846. William Barrett was about 22 at the time. After war Barrett resided in Gatesville, Coryell Co. until his death.

James was born in Haywood Co. Tennessee 11 Oct 1842. He has 11 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 3 May 1862 in Capt James B Stephenson's Co [Elmore's Regt.] Texas Infantry at Red Top by Lieut. Fountain for 3 years. He mustered at Camp Travis, Hempstead, Texas on 14 May 1862. It is 45 miles to rendezvous. Assigned to District of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona in Trans Mississippi Dept. Assigned to serving coastal guard duty from Galveston to the Sabine River. In April 1864 reported 622 men present for duty with 21 officers. Its men trained for heavy artillery duty and was in the battle of Galveston and a skirmish with the federals outside the city, both of which were Confederate victories. For a short time they fell under the command of General John B Mcgruder as 3rd Corps. They surrendered at Galveston on 2 June 1865. He died 17 May 1905 and is buried at Bays Chapel in Montgomery Co. Texas. He was the Father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed. Deo Vindice

CMR: Nov. Dec.1862 / sick sent on leave for 15 days. He did not return and was listed as AWOL. His pay was stopped and he was arrested. He is found back in his unit and present for duty in Jan 1864.
