JOHN HIRAM KELTON - 1st Lieutenant |
My ancestor was originally a private, but promoted to 1st LT. He endured the siege of Vicksburg and was paroled there. He was fortunate enough to be atthe Battle of Piedmont, in which the 39th suffered horrible casualties for the amount of troops involved. After the war he resided in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he helped build the University of Arkansas.

Meredith H. Raper - Corporal |
Meredith fought with this unit with his brother, Larkin, and brother-in-law. Both his brother and brother-in-law died at Vicksburg. Larkin, most likely, while as a prisoner. Unknown when the brother-in-law died.
Before Vicksburg, this company made a 700 mile trip from Tennessee into Kentury and back. They may have showed up at Perryville the day after the battle ended or may have actually been in the battle. Not sure.
After losing his relatives and with such great hardships being in the Confederacy, Meredith chose to return home to his wife and 10 kids after Vicksburg.
