Andrew served from the spring of 1863 to the fall of 1864. He escaped the Skirmish at Rogersville, 6 Nov 1863, according to family lore:
"During the skirmish at Rogersville, Andrew was able to avoid capture by riding his horse across Big Creek. In his bold escape, rebels noticed Andrew as he rode down the creek banks -- apparently, he was waving his kepi and shouting at the advancing rebels. A Confederate soldier shot at Andrew from across the creek, one shot striking Andrew in the left breast, however, Andrew did not die. The bullet lodged in Hope's plug of Brown's Mule Chewing Tobacco as he rode away, escaping capture."

David L. Hope served from 1862 to 1864. He was captured at Rogersville, Tennessee, 6 Nov 1863, and sent to Richmond, Virginia, with other members of his regiment. David Hope was confined to Belle Isle prison, on the James River, during the winter of 1863. He was sent to Andersonville Prison in late February 1864 but did not make the complete journey. David Hope, and other prisoners, were left at Augusta, Georgia, for medical treatment. He passed away near the same time he was dropped from the trip.
David Hope was buried in Augusta, Georgia, on 10 Mar 1864, however, his final resting place resides at the Marietta National Cemetery. His remains were reinterred in Cobb County following the close of the Civil War.

|
John Looper enlisted on 20 May 1862, and enrolled on 10 July 1862 at Huntsville for a three-year term in the U.S. Army, 2nd Tennessee Infantry. After a number of engagements, including the occupation of Cumberland Gap in the summer and autumn 1862; the Battle of Stones River, 2-3 Jan. 1863; Buffington Island and Salineville, 19 and 26 July 1863 (capture of Morgan's raiders); and the Battle of Blue Springs 10 Oct. 1863, Looper was captured with most of his regiment at the Battle of Rogersville, Tenn., on 6 Nov. 1863. He was imprisoned at Richmond's Belle's Isle later that month, spent a hard winter on open ground without fires and only one ragged blanket to sleep on, and was sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia on 18 February 1864. We know little of his experiences there, except that his brother Emerson, who had enlisted with him, died there of dysentery on 19 June 1864, and that family tradition says he had to eat rats to survive and that his bones were sticking through his skin. John was paroled to Charleston, S.C., on 10 Dec. 1864, and exchanged at Annapolis, Md., on 23 Feb. 1865. After his exchange he went via Baltimore and Cincinnati to Nicholasville, Ky., and then walked part of the way to Somerset, Ky., not making more than 4 miles some days because of weakness. He did not serve again, and was discharged on 19 June 1865 at Knoxville, Tenn.
If he hadn't survived, I wouldn't have been born!

Mustered in 26 Oct 1861 at Camp Wildcat KY, 1st Lieut. Captured at Rogersville about 6 Nov 1863. Confined at Libby Prison in Richmond VA. As being transported by train to Macon GA on 7 May 1864, he escaped 15 May 1864 by jumping from the train with another prisoner. Ate buds off trees and handouts from Union sympathizers. Got back to Union lines after a month of dodging the Confederacy. Mustered out 6 Oct 1864 at Knoxville, TN. Died at age 79 from diseases contracted in prison camps.

John Rothleiter Greer - Private
|
John Rothleiter Greer was born in 1840 in Bavaria, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the 1850's and moved to East TN. He took the last name Greer after his mother re-married. He enlisted in Company G, 2nd U.S. TN Infantry Regiment on 25 Oct 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson in Knoxville, TN. Captured by Confederate forces on 6 Nov 1863 at Rogersville, TN. Held at Belle Isle, VA and Andersonville, GA as prisoner. Received honorable discharge from Camp Chase, OH on 20 Mar 1865. Married Elizabeth Bosemer on 8 Jun 1870 in Louisville, KY. John Greer died in 1922 in Louisville, KY, and was buried at the Reheboth Cemetery in Laconia, Indiana.
Many of the Andersonville survivors from the regiment were killed on the S.S. Sultana steamboat explosion on April 27, 1865 in Memphis, Tennessee.
