Enlisted, age 22, 05 Sep 1861 as Cpl, Co M, 100th PVI at Webster, Westmoreland, PA. Promoted to Full Sgt on 15 Nov 1862, Full Sgt 1st Class on 17 May 1863. Survived the sinking of the West Point steamer in the Potomac River, 11 Aug 1862. Wounded and captured at the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg, VA on 30 Jul 1864. Imprisoned at Danville Prison, VA. Escaped from Danville on 10 Oct 1864. His group of escaped POWs headed west and rejoined the Union lines at Knoxville, TN on 18 Nov 1864. Promoted to Cpt 12 Jan 1865. Mustered out 24 Jul 1865 with 100th PVI, Harrisburg, PA. Member of Gordon Meade Post 14, GAR, Department of Kansas, Sterling, KS.
