Company E
James Pierce Quindlen/Quinlan - Captain
'QUINDLEN' is the correct spelling of the last name. JPQ was wounded in the right shoulder at Deep Bottom, VA in 1864. Records following that are not in his handwriting and have several variations of the name. The PA monument at Gettysburg has the wrong spelling.
His medical case is documented in 'The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion' (1877), Part II, Volume II, pages 552 & 559. His image (a lithograph) appears opposite page 536. He was shot and operated on on Aug 14, 1864. The injury is described as: 'A minie ball passed through the head of right humerus, fissuring the upper extremity of shaft.' Treatment was: 'Removal of the head and two inches of humerus, by Surgeon J.W. Wishart, 140th Pennsylvania.' JPQ died in 1871 of his wound which never really healed. He was buried at Union Ground Cemetery in Philadelphia. That cemetery was removed and moved to the Philadelphia Memorial Park in Fraser, PA, in the 1970's. His grave is marked with a veteran's marker. He is the only Civil War burial there.
JPQ's grandfather (John) fought in the American Revolution. My father was JPQ's grandson and named for him. The writer, Anna Quindlen, is his great-great grand-daughter.
