Christian Zeitler - Private
Christian Zeitler emigrated from Baden to the U.S. in the early to middle 1850s. The family settled in Baltimore. The summer of 1861 found him in Western Pennsylvania for reasons unknown. In July he enlisted in Allegheny City, now the north side of Pittsburgh, with the 62nd PA volunteers.
The 62nd, originally designated the 33rd Regiment but later renumbered by the federal government, was one of the earliest 3 year regiments.
Christian served till he was wounded at Bethesda Church in Virginia, the far end of the line at Cold Harbor. He lost the use of his left arm as a result.
After recovering he for a time rejoined his family in Baltimore, but soon returned to Allegheny. There he married Maggie Sellman; had 8 or 9 children, only 4 of whom lived to adulthood; belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic and the Union Veterans Legion; worked at various jobs with some difficulty due to his wounds; and died on Decmember 30, 1903.
He is buried with his comrades in the GAR section of Uniondale Cemetery in northern Pittsburgh.
