His last name is sometimes spelled Saunders. Reuben was born in August of 1836 and he died in January 1929 and is buried in Claysville Cemetery in Claysville PA. He enlisted in 1862 in Pittsburgh, PA. Reuben fought at Hanover, Gettysburg and was taken prisoner at Brandy Station in October of 1863. He was paroled in April of 1864. Reuben was with the 18th during the Cedar Creek Battle and served to the end of the war. He was wounded on at least two occasions. Reuben is my great-great grandfather and a Great American.

I am searching for a photo that I existed of him in 1975 and was owned by my great-aunt in Ohio, she passed away then and no one seems to know what became of the photo. Enlisted 3 October 1862 in Johnstown, PA captured at Mine Run, VA 5 May 1864 d. 28 July 1864 at Andersonville Prison, Andersonville, GA. Grave number 4181 Andersonville National Cemetery.

Enlisted Dec. 1862 in Philadelphia and took Oath of Allegiance to the United States at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, PA. … Joined his Unit (Company A) at the Fairfax Court House, Fairfax, VA. Assigned to Army of the Potomac / Defense of Washington. Assigned to Company L, Feb. 1863.

Duty in Washington, Maryland and Virginia including Bladensburg, Germantown, Little River Turnpike, Virginia shore, Long Bridge and guarding gaps in the Blue Ridge Mountains … Battle of Chantilly, VA, Feb.10 and 26, 1863 … Patrol, scouting and skirmishes in and around Centerville and Falmouth, VA, Feb. 26 and 27, 1863.

GETTYSBURG CAMPAIGN (June 25 – July 8, 1863). … Left Fairfax Court House with Brigadier General Stahel’s Division to join the main Army of the Potomac, which was watching General Lee’s army on its march to the North, June 25, 1863. … Battle of Hanover, PA, June 30, 1863. … Battle of Hunterstown, PA July 2, 1863. Advanced on Gettysburg through Berlin, Abbottstown and New Oxford, PA July 2, 1863. Arrived on the field at Gettysburg, PA, the evening of July 2, 1863. … Battle of Gettysburg, Big Round Top (Bushman Hill) July 3, 1863. … In pursuit of Lee’s retreating Army of Northern VA, July 4, 1863. … Battle of Hagerstown, MD July 6, 1863.

Following the Battle of Hagerstown, July 6, 1863 “Company L” Records/ Roster show Lawrence Fiegenschuh as Missing In Action. Later found to be a Prisoner of War and held at Belle Island, VA. ... Paroled and reported back to the Union Army in Washington where in January 1864 he was Honorably Discharged from the Service by Medical Surgeon Certificate. … Lawrence Fiegenschuh died Nov. 8th, 1871 at the age of 48 years and 3 months from Tuberculoses in Philadelphia. His place of burial is Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. … There are three monuments at Gettysburg, which memorialize the 18th Pennsylvania. Two are at Big Round Top (one of which specifically honors the 3rd Division, 1st Brigade.) The third is the Pennsylvania State Monument where under the dome the name “L. Fiegschuh” (missing the “en”) appears on the 18th Pennsylvania Plaque. … An inscribed brick honoring Lawrence is placed in the Pennsylvania Section of the Walk of Valor, National Civil War Museum, Harrisburg, PA. On three lines it reads:
