Nathaniel Rutter Carson - Sergeant |
Nathaniel Rutter Carson was the husband of my 2nd great grand aunt.
He was born in Cecil County, MD in 1835 & was a druggist by trade. Living in Tennessee at the start of the war with strong Southern family ties & having expressed Union sentiments, he was forced to move back to MD in early 1862. He enlisted in F. Co., 3rd PA Heavy Artillery in August 1862. In late 1862, he was transferred to the regular Army by special order with the position of hospital steward in Alexandria VA. In Feb. 1864, he was transferred to a Chattanooga, TN field hospital. In Sept. of 1864, he was ordered to report to Gen. Thomas in the general hospital at Lookout Mountain. He was honorably discharged at Lookout Mountain Georgia July 24, 1865. Very active in the G.A.R., he held the position of quartermaster of the John A. Dix post in San Jose, CA. He died in that city on June 27, 1910.
