Company D
John Norton
- Private
Born in Limerick, Ireland, John Norton enlisted in the 'Granville Company', Company D, 113th OVI, stating his age as 43. He saw all actions of the 113th after joining his Company at Rossville, GA on March 9, 1864, after the 113th returned to Chickamauga. He served with his son, Thomas, in the same Company. (See Thomas Norton in this section)

John was wounded in the upper left thigh and groin area by an exploding shell during the battle at Jonesboro, Georgia. The Union Army's victory at Jonesboro caused the Confederate forces in Atlanta to evacuate the city and burn everything that might be of use to the Union forces.

John's wounds weren't severe enough to end his service. He continued serving with Company D, 113 OVI until they were mustered out at Louisville, KY. After the war, John suffered greatly from his injuries, which caused a condition known as 'hydrocele'. He received a pension for his service and disability.

According to his pension record, he wasn't able to support himself after 1868 and changed locations often, living with his children and staying in various soldiers homes. John died in 1898 at the government hospital in Washington,DC which later became known as St. Elizabeth's.

Company D
Thomas Norton
- Private
Thomas Norton was born in Canada. He enlisted in the 'Granville Company', Company D, 113th OVI at the age of 19. He saw all actions of the 113th after joining his Company at Rossville, GA on March 8, 1864, after the 113th returned to Chickamauga. He served with his father, John, in the same Company. (See John Norton in this section)

Thomas was wounded at Mill Creek, NC (Bentonville) in the face by the muzzle-blast of a rifle which 'was discharged almost in his face'. He lost the sight in his right eye over time and his left eye was also injured. He also suffered bayonet wounds to his right hip and right ankle.

At Bentonville, the 113th was in the area called the 'Bull Pen'. They were, along with other regiments, surrounded on three sides by confederate forces. The fighting was hand to hand and the 113th eventually over-ran a position defended by South Carolina volunteers.

Thomas was pensioned $8 per month for his service and injuries until his death in 1902.
