Henry Dykes - Sergeant
|
This intrepid Union soldier previously fought in Mexican War; he enlisted at the beginning of war and fought for the entire duration. In letters home to his wife he said: 'I for my part would like to go home, but I can't think of goin' home as long as a Reb' says 'fight'. I am stronger for the Union every day, and if any Northern man could see the destruction that is in this country where the two armies passes, he would be a Union man!' Henry Dykes survived the war, and although he was a native of Beaver OH, is now buried in Lovington IL. A more solid, die-hard Union soldier has never marched. May he rest in peace: his regiment was lacking shoes when they marched to Knoxville TN in ice-covered roads of November of 1864. Let us not doubt that brave manhood backed by principles has enduring value; that was the whole lesson of this man's life. We have letters of this man mentioning many friends and relatives; ask me if you think yours is one.
