His first cousins John T. Sloper and Daniel M. Sloper had moved to Virginia before the war, and they fought for the Confederacy (John in the 35th Virginia Cavalry and Daniel deserted from the 8th Virginia Infantry).

Son of Horace Wheeler Nichols and Abigail Chloe (Holt) Nichols of Naugatuck, CT. His brothers Horace (died at Gettysburg), Edward and Henry all served the Union in other regiments. Enlisted in Company K, New York 184th Infantry Regiment on 15 Sep 1864. Promoted to Full Corporal. Mustered out on 29 Jun 1865 at City Point, VA.
