James M Witherspoon - Private
My great great grandfather Richard McDonald, born in 1817 in Jersey City, New Jersey cooresponded with his nephew James M. Witherspoon while he served as a private in the 48th New York Regt. Company H. I have a copied letter from my great aunt, that James wrote to Richard McDonald while he was stationed at Fort Pulaski,Ga. The letter was written on July 23, 1862, my great aunt has the original letter and says it is very fragile. The letter is beautifully written, he talks about the death of Coloniel Perry and that the regiment misses him a good deal. James died in battle at Fort Wagner,Sc on July 18, 1863 he was among the missing. If anyone has further information please email. Thank You
