Thomas Hall Hamilton - 1st Sergeant
|
First Sergeant Thomas Hall Hamilton was one of 54 men recruited by Gerard Crane Brown for the 38th New York Volunteer Infantry who comprised the first company of volunteers from Putnam, Westchester and Dutchess Counties, New York. He enlisted on 11 May 1861, at New York City as the First Sergeant of Company G, 38th New York Volunteer Infantry at age 24. He fought at the battle of First Bull Run on 21 July 1861. His official NY State records indicate that he resigned on 20 August 1861 while Federal records state he deserted from Camp Scott, Alexandria, Virginia on 19 September 1861.
The extract of his New York State records also state that he was entered as a deserter on 19 September 1861. The remarks section further records that he 'appears as Private on the roll for Sept & Oct 1861'.
Further research reveals that Thomas H. Hamilton also served later in the Civil War under the alias Thomas Hall (his middle name and mother's maiden name).
He was recruited by E. H. Hawkins June 14, 1864 and mustered-in to the 19th New York Independant Artillery Battery at Buffalo, NY. He was ordered to report to Elmira and was turned over to Colonel B. F. Tracy on June 23, 1864. Hawkins received $10 for delivering him to Elmira.
His enlistment papers gives the following information:
'Thomas Hall born in Lancaster, England aged 24 years and by occupation a Machinist, volunteered June 14, 1864 at Buffalo, NY. Described as having: 'blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5ft 7-1/2 inches tall.' He was credited to the 30th State Senatorial District for bounty purposes. Thomas joined his Regiment during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia and fought in the following engagements:

Battle of Poplar Grove Church, 9 and 21 November 1864

Martin Gilbert Louis Baxter - Private
|
This is my great-great uncle on my father's side. He lived in Putnam Valley, NY. He was engaged in the battle of Seven Pines in Virginia with Col. James Stroup, 38th NY Volunteers under George McLellan's command. He was wounded on June 1, 1862 and died the following day. He is buried in Virginia in a mass grave, although there is a monument erected by his family in Tompkins Corners Cemetery on Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley, NY.
