22nd Missouri Infantry
Company F
James T. Humphrey - Private
This story is far from complete but I believe my 3rd Great Grandfather, James Humphrey, enlisted in Cap't Rice's Co., of the 22nd Reg't Missouri Infantry at Macon City on Oct 15, 1861. The story is very involved and I won't go into it here but he was with Co. F (under Capt Rice) 22nd MO Infantry until July, 1862, when the 22nd was disbanded.

While with the 22nd MO he was involved in actions at New Madrid, MO and Island #10. His record states him as Absent and 'Sick in Hospital at Hickman, Ky' as of the end of June, 1862. In July, 1862, Co. F 22nd MO Infantry was reassigned as Co. E 24th MO Infantry, still under the command of Cap't Rice.

James is listed as 'Present' from July 1862-Oct 1862. The Roll dated December 1862 lists him as 'Absent', 'In Northern Hospital'. All Rolls after that have the same entry but starting on the April card it states 'In Northern Hospital since Dec 25, 1862'. The record shows cards for James through August, 1864.

The record further states, James died at Jefferson Barracks MO, Ward P on March 21, 1863. James' widow applied for a widow's pension on July 17, 1863. The only paper found in the pension file at the Nat'l Archives was a 'drop card' stating the widow had died in 1899 and payment to her was no longer neccessary.

James was a resident of Jefferson Co., Illinois but his military experience was with a Missouri Regiment(s). This isn't odd due to Illinois allowing their citizens to join regiments in nearby states.

I would like help finding the full pension file. The only detail I need to confirm is that James was a resident of Illinois (which I fully believe to be true). Any assistance would be appreciated.
