John Crowninshield Wilder - Private |
John C. Wilder was one of three brothers who fought in the civil war for the Union. He served his full term, mustered out April, 4th 1865, and moved his family to California, where he ran a blacksmith shop.
I have occassionally found him mis-represented online as a confederate soldier. His pension papers from the national archives, clearly state he fought on the union side.

Jefferson J Banks - Private |
Unionist Jefferson and his family fled mid-Tennessee to Arkansas after it fell under Union control. He mustered into the U.S. Army at Berryville, AR on 28 January 1864 at age 41. He served during the conflicts repulsing Price's Raid throughout western Missouri. He mustered out (according to Federal sources, although local records of the time stated that he deserted, this was a common 'miscommunication') on 23 December 1864, after official fighting in the area had ended. After the war, bushwhackers burned out the entire town of Berryville, but for 2 structures. Jefferson returned to Hardin and then McNairy Counties of Tennessee, where he raised a large family and lived until 1905 as a farmer.
