GGG-Uncle
G.W. Goins was originally from Lawrence County, Kentucky. He moved to Missouri in the 1850's. He enlisted in the 1st Missouri Cavalry, CSA, in 1861 after serving in the Missouri State Guard. He was with his regiment thru the entire war in many battles in Missouri, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee - Perryville, Corinth, Stones River, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, and the Atlanta Campaign. He was wounded at Peach Tree Creek (Atlanta) on July 21, 1864. On 9 April 1865 he was wounded again, this time by a cannonball in the left arm at Ft. Blakely, AL, and captured. While a POW at Vicksburg his left arm was amputated. He survived and was released in May 1865.

Daniel lost his right eye on May 22, 1863 at the Battle of Vicksburg and was killed at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 20, 1864.

Later transferred to the 10th Missouri Calvary and remained there throughout the war. He was in Price's raid on Missouri, and surrendered in New Orleans in May 1865. He was paroled in Shreveport in July 1865. Alex and his wife lost two sons during the Civil War

He was captured by Union troops during the Battle of Big Black outside of Vicksburg and was sent to Camp Morton, a prisoner of war camp in Indianapolis. He escaped a few months later, returned to Missouri and joined Captain William Clarke Quantrill's Confederate Raiders under George Todd. John and his brother Alex where killed on March 30, 1865 by Union militia in Clay County Missouri.

Captured at Big Black River, May 17th, 1863; transferred to Point Lookout Prison Camp, 9/63; transferred to Hellmira Prison Camp, 8/16/64; paroled, 2/15/65. Died, 1912.

My GGGreat Grandpa. He enlisted in December of 1861 and fought in every engagement with 1st Missouri Cavalry until he was captured at the Battle of Big Black River Bridge on May 17, 1863 during the Vicksburg Campaign. After being captured he was transferred to the POW camp at Pt. Lookout, MD, then to Ft. Delaware, DE and finally to notorious (death camp) 'Hellmira' POW prison at Elmira, NY in Sept. of 1864. He was returned to Confederate control as a part of a prisoner exchange in March 1865 and shows up on the rolls of the 16th Louisiana Infantry Reg't in Contrille, AL. GGGrandpa Potter was surrendered and listed as a POW once again on May 8, 1865 and is listed as being paroled at Meridian, MS on May 16, 1865. After the war he returned to Callaway Co., MO. and was married. Eventually he and his family of five children made their way to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma where he died January 16, 1903. GGGrandpa Potter is buried with his wife, Jane Ann Boswell, in the Oaklawn Cemetery Tulsa, OK.
