Company F
John Shrum - Private
1822 - 1865 John Shrum enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, and was assigned to Company "F", 3rd Missouri Cavalry, in General Joe Shelby's Brigade. This regiment is variously listed as 3rd Regiment, Shelby's Brigade; Smith's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry; Thompson Regiment, Missouri Cavalry; Hooper's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry; but was designated by the Confederate War Department as the 6th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry. On September 12, 1862, he re-enlisted in Company "F", Sixth Missouri Cavalry. He was enlisted by Colonel Coffee in Newton County, Missouri. Both John Shrum, and his son, Jacob, are listed as privates, Company "F", Hooper's Regiment, with residence in Dade County, Missouri. They appear on the Roll of Prisoners of War when the regiment was surrendered on May 26, 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana, by General E. K. Smith to Major General E. R. S. Canby, U. S. Army. The prisoners were paroled (released) a few weeks later on June 14th, 1865, at Shreveport, Louisiana. John Shrum became sick with fever and chills, and died while en-route home to Missouri. His burial was along the route that he and his regiment were taking on the return, somewhere between Shreveport, Louisiana and Dade County, Missouri, possibly in the state of Arkansas.Military service: Private, Company F, 6th Missouri Cavalry (Confederacy)Occupation: farmer, Soldier in the Civil War
