Thomas Benjamin Nichols - Private |
Thomas Benjamin Nichols was my 2nd great grand-uncle. He was a private in Company B of the 9th Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters. He was captured on November 25th, 1863 at the Battle of Missionary Ridge and sent to P.O.W. camp at Louisville, KY.

Records show him in Company D and/or Company A.
Captured 4 Jan 1865 Itawamba County,Missisippi.
Records show that he was transferred to Camp Chase Ohio.
It is not clear that he actually reached Camp Chase Ohio.
Release 18 Jun 1865
Three of his brothers, James, Archibald, and William served in other Mississippi Regiments.
After the war John Edwin returned the family business of carriage making as a carriage painter. When he married he followed his in-laws out to San Jose California. His carriage painting shop was located at what is now the HP Pavilion.
John Edwin Christy is buried at Oak Hill in San Jose, his grave is about 150 yards from the GAR burial area.

Frank Wilkinson is my cousin. He and his brother, Jefferson W Wilkinson, joined Co. C 7th Regt. Miss. Inf. in Amite County. Jeff was killed at Shiloh. Frank was selected to Chalmers' Brigade Sharpshooters (9th Battn. Miss. SS). He survived the war. His other brothers, Micajah (2nd Miss. Militia 'state troops' Quinn's) and John Cain Wilkinson (Co. K 33rd Miss. Inf.), also survived the war.
