The old Mercantile store and cotton gin still bears his name on the side of the brick in Shuqualak, MS in Noxubee County. Mentioned for Gallantry by Gen. Patrick Clebourne at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN.

Wounded and captured at Perryville. Survived the war and is buried in the Lee family cemetery, Simpson County, MS.

1835-1883 Commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant on 10 Aug 1861 at Richmond, Itawamba County. Captured 22 July 1864 during the Battle of Atlanta. Released on oath & parole 25 July 1865 at Johnson's Island, Ohio.

The family story is that two brothers, C.C. and F.M. joined the Mississippi Infantry (C.C. the 45th Infantry, Co. D--later re-named the 3rd Battalion--and F.M. the 4th Regiment, Co. H). Each of them got sick, according to Mona Jacobs Elliott, my grandmother, and were nursed by their mother, Salinie P. (James) Heath who went to the hospital to do so. The military record of C.C. shows that he enlisted in March of 1862, was absent due to sickness some of the next year, and died 27 March, 1863 at the hospital in Tullahoma, Moore, TN. Tullahoma later was taken over by the Union and over 400 Confederate prisoners died there, but C.C. had died before that time. Unclear where his burial might have been, but possibly in the CSA cemetery at Tullahoma, TN. The family home must have been somewhere near Corinth, MS, because that was where C.C. enlisted, with a Lt. Fox. C.C. was born 15 Apr 1842, the fifth of 14 children of Lamarcus K. Heath and Salina Perry James Heath. His youngest sister was my great-grandmother on my mother's side of my family. After the war, his parents and siblings emigrated from MS to TX, settled and farmed in and around Denton and Jack Counties.

Houston Haynie enlisted in the 45th MS Inf (3rd Battalion, MS Inf) with his brother William Martin Haynie in 1862 at the age of 17. He was wounded by a ball at New Hope Church and was on detail duty at the battle of Franklin where immediately after his Company was disbanded where he and other members secured horses and joined Forrest's Cavalry. With this command Houston Haynie engaged in many desultory skirmishes and fights until his surrender in Meridian, MS. After the war he returned to Pontotoc Co., MS with only a dollar bill on an Alabama bank and his clothes. He started a family and moved to Kaufman Co, TX where he made a name for himself as a farmer and later a banker in Rusk, TX. He is listed prominently in the 1914 book series 'A History of Texas and Texans' by Frank W. Johnson.

Joined the 33rd MS Volunteer Infantry later renamed the 45th MS Inf. and then the 3rd Battalion, MS Inf on July 7, 1862 at Tupelo, MS. His younger brother Cpl. Elijah Charles Houston Haynie joined him in the 45th MS Inf. Served until sometime in 1865. Moved to Kaufman Co., TX after the war and is buried in Kemp, TX.

Looking for more info on my great great grandfather's brother Ervin Fretwell. My GGGF fought on the Union side in the Alabama Calvary. An interesting split in the family.
