My great grandfather enlisted on May 1, 1862 for 'three years or War'. He was a physician, so he was detailed Assistant Surgeon on June 14, 1862.
Company muster rolls show him at the surrender to Union forces at Vicksburg on July 4th 1863. Upon being paroled, he signed an oath to never again take up arms against the United States.
However, Company muster rolls continue to show him 'present' during the next two years and surrendering again in North Carolina when hostilities were suspended in April 1965. He was among the officers and men paroled at Greeensboro, NC by order of Major General William T. Sherman on April 26, 1865. (Information from military records in the National Archives in Washington, DC).

My grand-fathers name was actually Thomas C Cogdell. There are several variations in the spelling, even among my present relatives. My dad was a Cogdell while married to his first two wives. When he took out his license in Lowndes County MS to marry my mother, he inserted the 's' in the middle.
I have undocumented information that TC was captured, and died in prison in Alton IL.
Thanks,
Tom
