When his state seceded he left his seat in congress and accepted the command of the 13th regiment of Mississippi volunteers, participated in the campaigns of Virginia, and rose to the rank of brigadier in the confederate service. He commanded the 3d brigade of Early''s division, during the second day''s fight at Gettysburg, and fell while leading his men in the assault on the national/eft.

enlisted in Capt. Daniel R. McIntosh's Company of the Mississippi Volunteers (seccessionists) for the Civil War and mustered into the service of the State of MS on April 27, 1861 in Quitman, MS, as a private.

He mustered into the service of the Confederate States on May 12, 1861 in Corinth, MS as part of the 13th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He was discharged in Union City,TN on June 12, 1861, because of disabilities.

Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on July 2, 1863, the same day he received his fatal wound taking the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was moved to Williamsport, Maryland during Lee's retreat, but died there of his wounds on July 28, 1863.

My GG Grandfather, Joseph Pearson Sanders was born June 1, 1831 in North Carolina. His home address, Isney, AL, MS/AL border, Choctaw & Washington County, AL (family records). He resided in Perry County, MS. His post office was Richton, MS, R.T.8. No.3. and was a bona fide resident of the State of Mississippi all his life (pension application). He served in the Confederate Army from May 1861 - April 1865. He enlisted as a Pvt. in the 13TH MS Infantry, Co.B (Co.C 1st yr), The Wayne Rifles, from Wayne County, MS. He transferred to Co.F, Lauderdale Zouaves from Lauderdale County, MS. (Co.G 1st yr) on Oct. 1, 1864. He ranked out as Pvt. He served in Brig. Gen. William Barksdale's Brigade who commanded the 13TH, 17TH, 18TH, & 21ST MS Infantry. BARKSDALE'S BRIGADE is part of THE ARMY OF NORTHERN VA, GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE - 1ST CORPS - LONGSTREET - IN McLAWS' DIVISION. The 13TH MS Infantry was organized in Corinth, MS on May 14, 1861, mustered into Confederate Service there on May 23, 1861, and reorganized at Yorktown, VA on April 26, 1862. The 13TH MS Infantry disbanded/mustered out at Appomattox Courthouse, VA on April 9, 1865 after the surrender of ROBERT E. LEE. The 13TH MS Infantry was involved in a number of major battles and skirmishes in between from Blackburn's Ford - 1st Masassas - Antietam - Frederickburg - Chancellorsville - Gettysburg to Appomattox.
Joseph Pearson Sanders was wounded 2 times during the war. He was shot through the right arm and hip. At the Battle of Malvern Hill, July 1,1862 (severe wound) and Skirmish at Berryville, Sept. 4, 1864 (wound). (I do not know which wound occured first or where). He sustained other permanent wounds and injuries that would disable him from earning a support. He got a hernia from his hip wound and his hands frozen at Knoxville, November, 1863. His death certificate states that his occupation, he was a retired farmer.
After the Civil War, JPS returned home to MS and married Mary (Polly) Everett in 1865. They had 8 children, only 5 lived. They homesteaded in Clark County, MS in the early 1870's. After Polly's death, somewhere between 1907-11, JPS went to live with his oldest son Jehu. JPS filed for his PENSION APPLICATION on July 15, 1916 and it was approved on Sept. 4, 1916. When his son Jehu died in 1917, JPS went to live at Beauvoir, Confederate Soldier's Home, The Last Home of Jefferson Davis, in Harrison County, Biloxi, MS on July 1, 1917 at the age of 86. JPS died on June 16, 1927 at Beauvoir at the age of 96. He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Beauvoir, not far from behind the tomb of the unknown soldier.

George Washington Acker was born in Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama in September 1839 to Lecil Bruton and Emeline Kennedy Acker. By 1850 he was living in Kemper County, Mississippi with his parents and six siblings. In 1860 he continued to live in Kemper County, Mississippi with his parents and seven siblings. In April of 1861 he mustered into “Captain Carter’s Company” of Mississippi Volunteers at DeKalb, Kemper County, Mississippi and in May of 1861 was enlisted as a Private into the Confederate Forces at Corinth, Mississippi. Carter’s Company became Company F and then C of the 13th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He listed his occupation as “clerk”. He rose to the rank of 2nd Sergeant prior to his wounding and capture at Knoxville, Tennessee.

In December of 1862 he was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia and in November of 1863 he suffered a wound at the Battle of Fort Sanders, Knoxville, Tennessee that resulted in the amputation of his entire left arm. He was left to be captured by Union forces and ultimately ended up at the Union POW camp at Rock Island, Illinois. From there he was exchanged in February 1865 via Lookout Point, Maryland. In March 1865 he as determined to be disabled and discharged from Confederate service.

On September 18, 1866, he married Martha “Mattie” Ellis. They had 7 childeren; Blance Gray (1867-1935), Ella Frances (1871-1940), Etta Lecil (1872-1962), Maude A. (1877 – 1915), Augustus Albert (1877 – 1926), Harry Victor (1880 – 1946) and Emma Levi (1883 – 1964). Ancestry.com indicates that George and Martha had 22 grandchildren.

In 1870 he was living with his wife and three children at Snow Hill, Wilcox County, Alabama and was working as a teacher. In 1880 he as living with his wife and six children in Kings, Dallas County, Alabama. He continued to live there until his death on February 8, 1901. His obituary indicated that he was very active in the local and state Democratic Party politics.

Memeber of the 'Kemper Legion' militia,as of May 14, 1861, and taken into CSA service at Corinth, MS in June with the rest of the unit. Single, Student, 19 years old.

Killed in Action at Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863.

No conclusive information was found on him at Ancestry.com.

He may have been related somehow to Edward Warren Anderson also of Co. C, 13th Mississippi Infantry.

Jacob 'Jake' Rosenbaum was mustered into state service on 4/13/1861 at DeKalb, Kemper Co., by R. O. Perrin. He was 18 years old, a printer, and lived near DeKalb in Kemper Co. He was unmarried. From 07/18/1861 to 8/20/1861 he was in a private hospital in Bristol, Tenn. On 07/01/1862 he as severely wounded at Malvern Hill in the Peninsula Campaign. He was granted would furlough for 40 days on 07/11/1862. The monthly returns show him to have been on continuous wound furlough through 05/01/1863.

At the battle of Berryville, Sept. 3. 1864, Jake was reported killed.

The next entry reports: '09 08 1864, Jacob [?] Rosenbaum, Co. C, Pvt. - Pvt., “Jake,” buried at Confederate Burial Ground in Cemetery, Winchester in grave”#1300 September 8, 1864 at Winchester, Va.”

Jakes' grave at Winchester is clearly marked in the Mississippi section the Stonewall Cemetery within the Mount Hebron Cemetery, 305 E. Boscawen St. Winchester, VA 22601 The cemetery's records do not have Jake's first name, Jabob, so his headstone merely says 'Rosenbaum'. Jake's grave marker is clearly marked as #38 in the Mississippi section of the cemetery.

Jacob Rosenbaum was born in Alabama, the son of Caroline and Marx. He had seven brothers and one sister. Descendants of Jacob's siblings still survive and thrive in east central Mississippi to this day (2017)

I am not related to Jacob Rosenbaum. Jake was 1 of 5 Jews known to served in the 13th Regiment and I wanted that story to be told here.

Thomas J Wootan enlisted in the Kemper Legion state militia on April 13, 1861, was subsequently taken into the 13th Miss. Inf. Regt. at Corinth, MS

He was mortally wounded at the 2nd Battle of Fredericksburg (Virginia) on May 3, 1863 and died of his wounds on May 6, 1863. He also is listed as being present at the actions at Leesburg, Virginia on October 21, and 22, 1861. At the time of his induction he listed his occupation as farmer, unmarried and 22 years of age.

His mother, Susan J. R. Lloyd applied for his unpaid wages.
CSA documents describe him as 5' 11' tall, that he had dark eyes, complexion and hair. His mother's affidavit stated he was unmarried and had no children at the time of his death.

Isaac Yates was mustered into 'Kemper Legion' of the Mississippi Militia on May 14, 1861. Along with other Mississippi Militia units they were inducted into Confederate States service at the Union City, Tenn. training center on June 4, 1861. He had been born in North Carolina and lived near Big Oak in Kemper County, Miss. He was present for the Battles of First Manassas (July 21, 1861), Garnett's Farm (June 27, 1862) and Savage Station (June 29, 1862). He was killed in action at the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 2, 1862.

His older brother, Hiram Yates, served with the Co. G, 35th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army. Hiram survived the war and died in 1915

Was a Confederate Sergeant in Company D, 13th Regiment, Infantry, Mississippi, for 'The War between the States.' May 17, 1861 in Corinth, MS at the young age of 19, John mustered into the Confederate States Army as a Private along with 4 of his brothers-- William T., Robert M., Samuel M., and David L.

John’s company was organized in 1861 in Decatur, Newton County, MS and was referred to as the “Newton Rifles.” Montgomery Carleton was the Captain of his company and Col. William Barksdale commanded it. John’s brother, Robert M. Patterson, was 1st Sergeant of the company when John enlisted.

He was engaged and fought in a continuous series of battles including: 1st Manassas, Leesburg, Garnett’s Farm, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Maryland Heights, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg 1st & 2nd day, Gettysburg 2nd & 3rd day, Chickamauga, Knoxville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Horseshoe, Hanover Junction, Cold Harbor June 3 & 5th, Petersburg June 21 & 22, Charlestown, Rockfish Gap and Cedar Run.

My great grandfather, David Simpson Young, signed into the Newton Rifles along with his older brother, Jesse W. Young. Jesse was later wounded at Sharpsburg and went home, but Grandpa fought on until he was wounded and captured at the peach orchard at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He spent almost 2 years at Fort Delaware until he was released in 1865.

James was born in Lowndes Co Ala.22 Nov 1833. He enlisted in [Old Co I] which became [New] Co G 13th Regiment Miss. Infantry. known as [ Secessionist] Enlisted at age 27 in Capt D. R. McIntosh's Co. at Corinth Miss. on 12 May 1861. Travel to rendezvous is 207 miles. James suffers from rheumatism and is out sick for most of the first year. His first fight is at Manassas 21 July 1861. He is our sick for some time & Jan 1863 finds him back in his unit. He is engaged at Gettysburg on the 2nd & 3rd of July 1863. Chickamauga is his last fight because of his illness. He is permanently detailed as a shoemaker for the Company. He is paroled 9 April 1865 and dies in June 1880 in Lincoln Co. Miss. We are related by a distant marriage.

David Thomas Hewlette (Hulet) David Hulet, Private of Captain G L. Donald''s Company (G) of the 13th regiment of Miss. Vols, born in Harris Co. in the State of Georgia aged 35 years, Six feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, gray eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer, was enlisted by Capt. Eckford at Union City Tenn on the 5th of July 1861 to serve 10 months & 7 days and is now entitled to a discharge by reason of not being included in the Conscript Act.
The said David Hulet was last paid by Capt. Turner to include the 30th day of June 1862 and has pay due from that date to the present date - 14th day of August.

Green was born in 1825 in Georgia. The 1860 census has him at 31 years old in Attala Co. Mississippi. The Post Office is at Multon Springs, He has 21 items in his archival file. He enlists 4 Aug 1862 at Brookhaven by Major Clark. Capt. McIntosh's Company. 9 May 1863 he suffers gunshot wounds to both thighs [flesh] and is in the hospital at Howards Grove at Richmond Va. returns to duty 29 July. He is captured in a skirmish at Berryville, in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Sent to Camp Chase in Ohio. Released 10 June 1865 after swallowing the Yellow Dog. He is described as having Dark hair, Dark Complexion, Hazel eyes and 5 foot 11 inches tall. he is 36 years old. The 13th was in the thick of the fight at every turn. Some of the Battles: 1861 Manassas, Seven Days, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Captured in the skirmish at Berryville during the Shenandoah Campaign.

Enlisted 2 May 1861. Survived the war and returned to MS where he married Martha Jane Sugg and raised his family. Buried in Midway Cemetery in Calhoun Co.

Captured at Battle of Sailor's Creek, 3 days before surrender at Appomattox. Died October 1910. Buried Cascilla, Tallahatchie county, Mississippi.

Will and brother, Charles Wesley Kendall served in the MS 13; another brother, James Asberry Kendall served in the MS 24th Infantry.

Benjamin was born in Tennessee. The 1860 census finds him in Division 1, Chickasaw Co. Miss. He is 30 years old, and the Post Office is at Sparta. He has 13 items in his archival record. He enlists at Sparta on 23 March 1861 in Capt. Wesley Mellard's Company of Vol's. [Spartan Band] He travels 130 miles to Corinth Mississippi where he is mustered into Confederate Service on 2 May 1861 and is in Capt. William H Worthington's Company. He is involved in two battles: 1st Manassas and Leesburg, Va. He is medically discharged 21 Jan 1862 suffering from Chronic Rheumatism. He died 20 Nov 1919 at Cairo, Clay County, Mississippi and is buried in the Cairo - Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cem in that town. He is the father-in-law of my 2nd cousin 3 x removed. May his soul be at rest.

Hockaday was born 2 May 1840. He died of wounds suffered at Gettysburg during the fighting on July 2, 1863.
He is my great,great,great grandfather's nephew.

Newton Nash was killed July 2, 1863 at the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg.

This looks interesting. If anyone has information about James Pinckney Breazeale, confederate veteran, I would love to hear from you. He was my great-grandfather, and would most likely have fought with a Louisiana unit. He came from Neshoba County, Mississippi, moving to Louisiana a year or so before the war. After the war, he settled in Attala County, Mississippi, where he lived until his death in 1910. I can not procure a record for him, but the Daughters of the Confederacy always place a flag on his grave every year. No one knows his unit, but it is believed he was in a cavalry unit.

Born in Georgia in 1835. Died in Corinth, Mississippi in 1875.

Granville was 32 years old when he enlisted 30 March 1861 at Corinth, Miss. In Capt. S J Randell's Co. Miss. Vols. { Pettus Guards] which became Old Co H and then Co K of the 13th Regiment Infantry. He was detailed as Color Guard. Fought at Manassas on 21 July 1861 and Leesburg Va. 21 Oct 1861. He was wounded and detailed as hospital nurse. Sent to Lauderdale Springs as Ward Master at Hosp. He had been shot in the knee at the battle of the wilderness on 3 May 1863. Detailed as Hq clerk and then detailed in Commissary Dept at Enterprise, Miss. Discharged 20 Apr 1865. Married 1853 and buried at Rose Hill Cem. beside his wife at Meridian, Lauderdale Co. Miss.
